"she thinks they will sale it as new when she returns it"

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that.

She is leasing it
She has so many part replaced , it will be  like new
Wheel bearing, wipe motor etc all under warranty
She also said she has gone though a couple set of tires

Ah...I get it..."all new everything"  ;D

What year is it? (Generation 1 or 2 ? )
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

Our '07 Suburban just got back from a week in the shop having the engine torn down and all the valve lifters replaced. Only 107,000 kms on the truck, but thank God for the 5/160,000 powertrain warranty.

If I had to guess I'd say it's the 5.3....seems to be quite a bit of talk about lifter problems and oil consumption with this engine on some of the GM forums when you Google.

Yes, it's the 5.3 with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) lifters. It seems to be a well-known issue, and GM has come out with a TSB and redesigned parts (which are now in our truck).

A small-block Chevy is always a small-block Chevy - not good.

I've had just over a month of trouble-free driving....I guess that was too good to last. Driving this afternoon and I noticed the CEL had come on. Now,I did get gas first thing this morning but I'm 99.9% sure the cap clicked and seated properly. I hope I'm wrong but I have this sinking feeling it might be the dreaded code "P0008" I've been reading about (timing chain)....I did think I was hearing a bit of a rattle/ticking from the engine in the last week or so but thought it sounded like a heat shield or exhaust issue. I'll see if the dealership can squeeze me in tomorrow long enough to read the code.

I'd say it's time for you to get me to detail it and get it ready for sale.   ;D

Your diary is bringing back memories of my last GM, a 1996 model. Terrible car, horrible customer care. Cost me a fortune between the time the warranty expired and I finally gave up and dumped it. Get the willies just thinking about it. Won't buy another - EVER!

I know what you mean. I'd say "Oh well, maybe it's a Friday car" but other people seem to be having similar problems.

I had the ECM recall done last month that modifies the OLM for shorter intervals between oil changes but I would think after 100K the damage to the timing chain would already be done.

Excerpt from letter to owner found in Buick forum:
However, we have determined that under certain driving conditions, and with extended oil
change intervals, the timing chain could wear prematurely and cause the illumination of the
Service Engine Soon light. Timing chain wear can be affected by the age of the engine oil and
driving conditions.

What We Will Do:
To ensure that your vehicle will not experience this condition, your GM
dealer will change the calibration of the engine control module, including the engine oil life
monitor, which in most cases will recommend more frequent oil changes

Had the code read and reset at Brett's this AM. They were pretty good about squeezing me in...service manager grabbed a reader and did it in the parking lot at N/C .   It was a P0420... "Cat converter below threshhold of acceptable performance." Could be exhaust manifold leak,O2 sensor, coolant temp sensor, or the cat itself. I'll wait to see if the code comes back and go from there.

You running low-grade gas in that thing? Guy buys a Caddy, then chintzes out on discount fuel... ;)

Look on the bright side - you know it isn't the timing chain!

If you truly were hearing something underhood, it might be a leaky x-manifold.

Typical of GM and their slappies...blame the owner, and not the POS vehicle/parts/engineering... :stick:

(IIRC, that car only requires regular unleaded)

Not all regular unleaded is the same. The stuff that Loblaws and Sobeys sell in exchange for a few cents per liter bribe cents-off coupon does not typically contain the additives and detergents found in most name brands. Although even with those there is considerable chatter that not all are the same. Some will tell you Irving is crap. Others say the same about Esso.

Ignore it all you want...but the truth stings.  That is the typical manner in which GM responds to complaints about problems with their cars...Blame the owner.  Stick head in sand about poorly engineered part.

Well I'd hope so. That is only 150,000 kms per car.
