New F1 engines from 2013
« on: December 10, 2010, 04:28:04 pm »
From the BBC  http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9275796.stm

1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbos with energy recovery and fuel restrictions to replace current 2.4-litre normally aspirated V8s    Rev limit of 12000 rpm
Fuel efficiency to increase by a target of 35%
Overall power to remain same at approx 750bhp
Checks and balances to ensure costs are contained and performance across all engines remains comparable
Fuel to be limited by fuel-flow restrictions and a stipulated maximum tank capacity
Plan for advanced 'compound' turbos to be introduced in subsequent years
Power of Kers energy recovery systems to increase from 60kw in 2011 to 120kw in 2013

750 bhp from a 1.6 I4 turbo.   Can I have a detuned one, say to 300 bhp, in my GTI please.
Actually, at various states of tune you could replace most car engines with one of these.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

What kind of transmissions do they use?

Turbo 4's are interesting, but few engine configurations match the aural pleasure of a V8 (cue Saffy)
Internal combustion thrust I trust

There must be a lot of turbo lag on those?

With that low, by F1 standards, rev limit they will certainly sound weird compared to this years 18,000 rpm V8s.

Nothing overly impressive.  At least not what you'd consider from F1 top tier tech.  Some companies in the private sector make modded factory 4 bangers that nearly put up numbers like that....
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

There will be zero lag.  The engines will be spun up enough where they will be into the meat of the turbo power at all times....

Well yes, but I mean from a standstill compared to much lower bhp/litre turbo engines.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWUo-IP1cec  Listen to about 2:00 into the video...

They'll still sound fine...  The old 1.5L V6 Turbos sure did, and they revved to about 14,000rpm, so a 12,000rpm inline 4 should sound great.  Honda, Renault, Ferrari had V6's, I know BMW used an inline 4...

Interestingly, inline 4's were very popular in the 50's and 60's...

Well that will happen once a race, and from the pits.  So no biggie.  Although it's quite possible they'll have variable vane tech and KERS will play a more prominent role, so the lag will be minimal.  They'll like leave the line at high revs too...so all in all there won't be much lag.

Read that this morning too.  The engines will also have to last longer.  In 2013, a driver will have 5 engines to use throughout the season, after that it will be reduced to 4.

Also, starting in 2011:

Driver adjustable rear wings allowed
Double diffusers banned
Team orders allowed

I wonder if the introduction of 4 cylinders, and the re-introduction of kers, will bring back refueling during the race at some point.  Otherwise the engineers will have to find space for the kers system, and a large enough fuel tank.  Although, if the cars are going to use less fuel then the fuel tanks won't need to be quite as big.

What about transmissions? Will we see manual transmissions back in F1 anytime soon? That's what I'd like to see. Let's lower the technology in these cars to the point where the driver actually makes a difference.

Gearboxes will also have to last 5 races instead of 4 starting in 2011.

I know what you mean.  Floor the throttle and the things upshift by themselves.  Auto to upshift, manual to downshift.

F1 sure knows how to spend (more) money! While claiming to be trying to save money. Or am I confused.

When these motors blow up its going to be pretty impressive...... And Adrian! Stop putting bodywork or anything near our turbo!

I don't know...I think these engines will be less stressed than the current one.  Heck..with such a low RPM ceiling, tyou could even use conventional valvetrains...
