Looking forward to seeing the design direction for Ford’s new compact SUV.

One thing is finally made clear (I hope) that the new Escape will not be based on the current Kuga, but a new design that will be shared with the new Kuga.

Alot must be riding on this update after 10 years on the market without a major redesign and still selling like hotcakes!

Dec 11th - Speculation about a possible production transfer ended today as Ford announced that the next-generation Ford Escape will be built at the Louisville, KY assembly plant following a $600 million investment and the addition of 1,800 jobs.

I like the formula of the current Escape.  Looks like an SUV, 240 hp V6, decent reliability, tons of techie toys and, most importantly, affordable.

How many compact SUVs can still pull a medium-sized boat?  Hopefully the new Escape doesn’t lose its “utility”.

Best selling SUV for the better part of 10 years?  If they lose the name it would be just plain stupid...

I too, like the Escape for its value, decent performance, and rugged looks. The interior is cheap, but hey, you get what you pay for!

I'm hoping for a 200hp EcoBoosted, sleek, stylish, kinetic design inspired, Ford Escape for 2013. I know the current Escape has been a success but whenever I see one I see the early 2000 inspired design. It's just not appealing at all to my eyes.

I'm a contrarian.. I know :)

...no I'm actaully a Dinosaur.  You know, the kind that uses a small SUV to tow boats and drive on poor roads, etc.  It seems the "utility" gets diminished every model refresh for small SUVs.

If I have this right... the Ford Kuga has twice the rated towing capacity (4600lbs versus 2000lbs) of the Ford Escape. It was a bit difficult to find the Kuga towing information but apparently that is it. So in terms of towing it sounds like it's perfectly capable. I assume that capability would continue in a new model.  For off roading something like the Explorer seems like the better bet... and if the reviews and PR are to be believed... it's very capable. Not Jeep capable.

Most people tend to drive these vehicles as on-road family haulers. In 5-10 that may even be me.

I wouldn't necessarily go by that. The Outback in Canada is rated at 1225kg with trailer brakes, but in the UK it's good for 2000kg. There's no real difference except for the hitch system.

It's all about liability in North America.  Similar cars in Europe tow X pounds.  The SAME car in North American has no tow rating, and in the manual say "no towing".  Same car.  Heck..there's even a tow rating for the Lexus IS series in Europe....

For the Escape, I surmise a loss of capability when the Escape switched from the Control Trac II system to “Intelligent 4WD”.  Control Trac II had a 4WD “lock” button similar to the RAV4 but also operated as a “slip and grip” system when the switch was off.  Intelligent 4WD (2005 onwards) is straight slip and grip – no ability to lock.  Intelligent 4WD supposed to anticipate slippage but I’d rather take my chances with having it locked to begin with for situations such as slippery boat launches, starting from a dead-stop in a snow drift, etc.  I could be wrong, but I would think losing the ability to lock the 4 wheels probably results in a less effective system and was a cost cutting measure.

Anyone interested in how the current Escape’s 4WD system works should check out this cool link.  Some dude put a sensor on the two drive shafts to see how the system works.  It seems on take off, there is some transfer of power to the rear wheels, regardless of slippage.  Once up to speed, it then reverts to 100% FWD unless needed.  It would be neat to have a comparison test of the various CUVs to check out actual capability.  Not rock hopping stuff, but drives down roads with 30 cm of snow, slippery boat launches, etc.  There really isn’t a lot of info on how the various 4WD systems work and whether it was adequate for someone’s needs.

Anyway, check this out for a test of the Escape’s AWD system.

I honestly don't have a clue why they would get rid of the Escape nameplate... it's been a very successful vehicle for them, and generally well-regarded. Why lose all that marketing equity and have to market a brand new name?

Being a compact SUV, based on the C-segment platform, I would guess it would look more like Focus in which case Territory face it is. Just guessing ....

Ford chief of design J.Mays has said do not expect Euro like design in any Ford North America truck like vehicles. I take this comment to refer to vehicles such as the Escape , Explorer, Edge, etc.
I predict that the Americas Escape will keep its truck like appearance, and the Kuga will continue with the Ford Euro evolution of the kinetic design.

J.Mays has said that the next design evolving past the current kinetic design will be seen in the next Fusion/Mondeo design styling, which is due 1st quarter of 2012 as a MY2013. In the same time line as what is happening with the new Focus, just a year later.
