How to protect wipers that have frozen on the windshield?
« on: December 05, 2010, 05:11:43 pm »
Anyone have suggestions for safely removing wiper blades that have frozen to the windshield? I often end up using the scraper to get them off.  I know some people leave the wiper arm lifted up. I don’t really like doing that. I did buy winter blades and a pair that appeared to durable looking.

Keep some in a spray bottle in the car.

The Outback has a heated strip under the wipers, so I don't bother anymore.

Heated washer nozzles could also help.   You can always pee on them if you are in a bind.  :)

1) Start the car and get it warming up,
2) Turn on the defroster,
3) Carefully remove snow and ice adjacent to the wiper blades,
4) Spray "Windshield & Window De-icer" on the wiper blades,
5) Give it a few minutes to melt the ice. Clearing the other car windows while you're waiting will keep you busy so you don't get PO'd, jerk the wiper blades loose and damage them.

We bought a bottle about five years ago and keep it in the trunk. There's still lots left.

That Bear Grylls chap once said to press down on the wiper then massage it onto the windshield. I tried it an it works.

That is what I do. Brush off all the loose snow Carefully press the wiper down and wiggle it a little until it comes off
When I remember, which is not often enough, on the GTI I move the wipers to the "service position" after stopping.

There is also this product your can install that will heat up your washer fluid from Canadian Tire.

Or "The Wiper Shaker"  :rofl2:

Had never thought to press toward the windshield and wiggling, although hasn't been a problem often so I haven't put much thought toward it. I'm getting better about remembering to set the wipers to service position lately.

Talking out wipers, does anyone have a suggestion for good winter wipers? After buying and not being impressed whatsoever by a few sets of various Teflon blades from CT, I've bought a couple of sets of Armor All Silicone they sell at CT, and find them to be pretty good. I just wanted to check if there were other options before buying a set for the Sonata... Suggestions?

I was thinking the same thing.  The old traditional rubber encased winter wiper blades work fine when it's snowing.  The res of the time they suck.  They don't curve very much, so it depends on the shape on your windshield.  Anything over about 80 -90 km/h they lift right off the glass.  Right now I'm using a pair of the Michelin blades from Costco.  I tried the Reflex blades from Crappy Tire.  The Michelin blades work better.

I bought Michelin brand frameless blades from Costco sale priced at $8.50 each plus HST. In my view they do a superior job. Rubber enclosed conventional blades are not as good, bordering on lousy, and several times more expensive.

A costly pair of Cambodian Tire blades I tried were very poor quality. They fell apart in my hands as I was installing them!

How are the Michelin blades any different than these Armor All blades that CT sells? (Apart from the price, apparently).

Can't say for sure, I've never tried the Armor All blades.  Just going by the picure, the Michelin's seem a little beefier, not quite as flimsy.  I also clean the actual blades quite often.  I'll use a squirt of either my glass cleaner or Rain-x on a blue shop towel and wipe the blade element.  I can't stand looking through a dirty, streaked windshield.

Do you know if I can get the Michelin ones somewhere else than Costco? I don't have a membership there.
