Source for vehicle NVH information?
« on: November 14, 2010, 08:57:49 pm »
I'm trying to find a source for vehicle NVH information.  I used to have a mark IV Golf that was very quiet and am trying to find a new economy car with comparable NVH levels.  Most reviews provide fuel economy and acceleration data, but hardly anyone provides NVH data.  Else, I'm not looking in the right place.  I drove a Prius and a Camry today.  The Camry was quiet, the Prius, not so much.  I'd be grateful for any information on NVH levels, thank you.

Are you writing about Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH)?
I have never seen that rating listed anywhere

The Sentra Versa and Elantra are very quiet for small cars IMO.  Corolla average, Civic terrible.

Yes, these ratings don't seem widely available.  The 'howstuffworks' website provides some information in their 'road test' section.  For example, here is the road test of the Elantra.  Under the section 'quietness' they have a value of 6 (class average 4.4):

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll check out these vehicles.

According to James, the Cruze is a very quiet vehicle. Same thing was said of the Fiesta. Those two might be worth a look.

I'll keep that in mind.  From my reading, it seems tires are key contributors to road noise.  'Road and Track' publishes sound pressure levels as part of their road test reports, although the site is hard to navigate.
