I picked up 4 Altimax tyres for about $85 each (15"). I always used to buy Blizzaks or X-Ice 2 but this year I wanted better value for money.

What has been said about Chinese products or Duruns in particular may, I say may, be true in general. But people should be very careful when giving such general advice. I have had General Altimax tires for 3 years and like them. But faced with getting new tires, I looked into many possibilities and decided upon the Duruns. In part it was because of price but also, while the Altimax and many winter tires are Q rated, the Duruns are T rated. This means they handle much better, or should and potentially could be better for regular driving and regular breaking. Most winter driving is done on dry pavement and winter tires are notorious for being bad at breaking on dry pavement They also famously wear badly, although the Altimaxes have not been that bad. So while I've not driven the Duruns, as most everybody else has not on this list, I'd still consider them. And if my trusted mechanic recommended them, perhaps this was because of price, but generally I wouldn't dismiss the advice of my trusted mechanic so easily, without reason, nor would I be advising others to. Bottom line, be careful in what you say if you don't know anything about the subject. You're not doing anyone any favours and this is supposed to provide the service of good advice to others, based upon personal EXPERIENCE.  ::)

Independent testers report Chinese tire quality is inconsistent and often dangerously substandard. Deal with it!

Duruns are an unknown quantity. They could be great, or they could be absolute garbage. All of the other ones mentioned are know quantities and rate well. Why would anyone take the risk to save maybe $100-150, especially after buying a $30k car?

Winter is almost over and I am very happy with my purchase. (Durun winter tires)

The snow traction is impressive for the price as the braking distance. However, traction on the ice was not the best especially when starting with a manual transmission.

The tire wear is minimal and I think I can make at least two others winter with these.

design of the tire tread is exactly the same as the Gislaved NordFrost5...
I am aware that the performance of Durun are not equivalent to Gislaved, but for less than $ 75 per tire, I got better perfomance on snow then other tires more expensive tried before.
