Durun Winter Tires
« on: November 07, 2010, 07:08:16 pm »
My mechanic has recommended these tires for my 2007 Mazda Speed Hatchback.

I have always taken his advice before on tires and been pleased.

As I am unfamiliar with this brand I searched it on the 'net and the only
info I've found is that it is made in China.

Does anyone have any info or frrdback on Durun Tires?

Never heard of 'em. There are lots of good, inexpensive brand-name winter tires available these days, so personally I'd take a pass on these. That's just me, though.

Plenty of Tires from around there at reasonable prices with known "goodness.   Hankook, Kumho to name but two. Hankook especially make very good winter tires.

Hankook and Kumho are Korean and have a good reputation, Durun is Chinese and has no reputation.

You didn't buy a Mazdaspeed because it was the cheapest car, don't cheap out on one of the most important parts of it.

Chinese tire quality is inconsistent and often dangerously substandard. I would look for used brand name tires on Kijiji and Craigslist before I went Chinese. Don't want to rain on your parade, but I would also wonder about a mechanic who recommends them.

If economy is your prime consideration go for the Canadian Tire Goodyear Nordic winter tires on sale this week at 15-percent off regular price. A Canadian Driver review (Feb-07) gave them a passing grade.

http://www.canadiandriver.com/2007/02/08/winter-tire-test-goodyear-nordic.htm

Canadian Tire also has General Altimax Arctic winter tires on sale at 30-percent off the steep regular price. Consumer Reports (Nov-2009) rated them superior to the much more expensive Bridgestone Blizzak WS60, Nokian Hakkapelitta 5 and Nokian Hakkapelitta R, but slightly inferior to the Michelin X-Ice XI2. They're a bit more costly than Nordics but worth it in my view. Though I dislike dealing with Canadian Tire I bought a set last week. The price was just too good to pass up for an independently top rated winter tire.

That's because that sort of tire is often marketed towards independent garages that wouldn't  get the price breaks on the bigger brands.  Don't know if that is the case here.
I've also heard of these coming over by shipping container load of assorted tires from some "brand".

As with pretty much all Chinese manufacturers, it's a pretty good looking copy of an established tire.  This one looks much like a studless Gislaved Nordfrost 5.

I'm in agreement with those who think the quality is suspect in these tires.  You can get fairly inexpensive quality assurance with Hankook or Kumho.

It may look okay but I bet the rubber formula isn't up to par. These latest generations of studless tires owe a lot of their performance to these new rubber formulations.

Definitely pass on them.  Why pay similar prices for a no-name tire with no known reputation when you could get a half decent known brand?  Or spend a few more dollars and get something really good.

Products from China seem to have very inconsistent quality, regardless of the type of product, or even who they are made by/for.  Until things change in this regard, I wouldn't buy things sourced from there when there is a choice (unfortunately, in some product categories, there really isn't a choice anymore).  Just look at the lead toys, melamine in dog food and milk and high tire blowout rates due to improper construction methods (google it for yourself).
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow - who wouldn't love the internal combustion engine?  ;D

If you wanted to buy a good inexpensive tire, just go with General Altimax Arctics. Not cheap enough? Nexen Winguards at Walmart or Hankook Icebears would be good choices or if ice is not as much of a concern try Firestore Winterforce or Canadian Tire Goodyear Nordic. Don't get cheap Chinese tires, get decent inexpensive tires. Do you want to Ling Long time or live a long time?

Pass on those Nexens too - made in China, and beware the Icebears, Hankook (and Kumho too) now makes some of their tires there.  Check the sidewall before buying.

I have the General Arctic Altimax.  While Continental has targetted these towards the low end of the price scale, they are actually an older design they originally sold as the Gislaved Nordfrost 3, considered among the best when they were new.  In the Gislaved line, this was replaced by the Nordfrost 5, but the older design lives on in under the General marque, and is still an excellent tire.  Performance seems to be comparable to the Blizzak WS-60 or X-Ice Xi2, which is better seems to depend on who's comments you listen to, but they are priced far lower than the Bridgestones and Michelins.  I've used the older Blizzak WS-50, and find I'm preferring the Arctic Altimax.

The Firestone Winterforce are a good choice too, but I have no first hand experience with them.  Performance probably isn't as good as the top tier winter tires though.

Nexen is a Korean tire brand. Even if it is made in China, I'm sure they would follow more strict quality controls over a 100% Chinese company.

Weird that the older generation Altimax Arctics (and the carbon copy tread designs in countless other tires) seem to outperform the Nord*Frost 5s in the snow and ice test (without studs).

I haven't heard of it... I heard they were bad on dry pavement though. So if they're not good in really cold and not good in mild temperatures, what good are they for??

Doesn't look like the OP has been back. I suspect she's a one post wonder and we're all talking to ourselves.

That being said I too would avoid the Chinese stuff. The Altimax's rate very highly and are well priced so why take a chance on an unknown?
