Who changes your tires over?
« on: November 04, 2010, 12:39:44 pm »
I notice a lot of people on here wait until the last minute to swap their tires over. I'm thinking that because we are mostly a group of enthusiasts, we have the tools/skills to do this whenever we want.

So cast your vote.

Me, do it myself. Bought a floor jack and tq wrench to make the process easier.

I've always done it myself....first with scissor jacks, now a floor jack.  I really need to get a tq wrench....I know.....I know, guess tightening is bad.  :-[

I enjoy doing stuff like that.  I've got a 3 ton floor jack, torque wrench, impact gun for the compressor.  I can usually leave it little later in the season because if I have to do it quickly (sudden snow in the forecast) then I can have them done in about half an hour or so.  No need to make an appointment anywhere.  Although, with a second child now, finding that half hour is getting harder and harder.   ;)

I do. A second set of rims pays for its self pretty quick. My Quest hasn't seen a stealership for over four years now.

Getting them done this afternoon.
I use a local tire shop here - they operate first come, first serve for wheel/tire swaps.
Drop it off first thing in a.m. and walk the remaining 2 minutes to work.  Pick it up after work.
Its convenient and they charge $30 + tax which i think is reasonable.
Supposed to be snow flurries tomorrow so figured i'd beat the rush today before everyone goes loony when they see white flakes for the first time this season...

EDIT: Now $40+ tax.   Maybe time to invest in the torque wrench & jacks, especially since its now $40 x 2 for our two cars.

I used to do mine but now I use the local shop to do it and to store the 8 wheels and tire.   I have the floor jack, torque wrench  but also have a bad case of laziness.

I do my change overs...my car, wifeys van, and Mom's car too.   30 mins per car and it's done in no time.   I also get to check the bushings, CV boots, front brake pad thickness, etc, etc.
Internal combustion thrust I trust

Me. That way I know it was done right.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

Tire shop is 15 min walk from my house. 25 tax in. I can walk home and come back or they have free wireless internet and I can sit on the couch and work for the 30 mins.

I used to do it myself on the Nissan but its just easier and I don't have to shoo the kids out of the driveway. I don't need to get cold and wet. My cheap torque wrench broke so I know thw toque is right, the shop will check the torque for after 80KM.

I get my mechanic to do it, he does it for free since I buy my winters and all-seaons from him and they're on their own rims. Since it was going in for an oil and filter change, brakes and winterizing the car. May as well have him do it since it's already hoisted off the ground.

I do the GF's and her mother's car since her brother is there to help me do it. Much faster to swap tires with 2 people.

Tire shop - Kal tire - they do free rotations if you buy tires/rims from them. So doing a switch over is the same as a rotation. I'd do it myself but my schedule does not permit at ideal times.

After the wife is done serving me dinner and has cleaned up, I send her outside with a jack and torque wrench.

Double check the torque, or do you trust her work?   ;D

Also, watch out for leaky brake-lines when she's done.
