Is certified pre-owned vehicle just a pretty name?
« on: October 27, 2010, 06:41:20 pm »
is it ok to buy certified pre-owned vehicle without any 3rd party inspection?
since certified has original dealership inspection, recondition, and warrenty
they also provide carproof

does anyone has option on this? what else needs to take into account when buying a certified car?

If it's part of a CPO Program...are you saying you're not buying from the dealership where the car was made CPO?  You'd be getting from a private deal or a 3rdf party lot?

I am thinking to get a certified pre own from an original dealership such as Toyota

I am wondering if it is good idea to assume that car is in good condition since it is certified pre own by Toyota dealership
so that I dont have to get a mechanics or an independent inspector to check it

I know from a private deal or a no name or not well brand dealer its good idea to have an unbiased inspection

but with brand named dealer such as Toyota dealership, there should not be a need to have another inspection on the car right?

Well the Toyota CPO inspection is a pretty lengthy one.  They pretty much look at everything.  In addition, it should come with a pretty robust warranty.

Yes, the  x number of years / mileage warranty that comes from a dealer CPO would be piece of mind enough for me

Is it just Toyota, how about other japnese dealer, mazda?
I know honda or acura has something called 150 points check which is better than CAA's 143 points check

so you wont bother to check the carproof and carfax etc as well as have it inspect by someone else than the dealer?

I'd spend the $ to get an independent inspection. I'm sure many of the dealers do these x# of checks with the same vigour that they do them as part of their overpriced maintenance "inspections".

I know for a fact that these inspections for CPO (at least for Toyota, Lexus and BMW IIRC) is different than a regular maintenance inspection.

Yes CarProof i suppose, but I wouldn't bother having another mechanic look at it.  If its under factory warranty any issues will be dealt with by the dealer

I don't know for certain.  Sorry.  You can always go in and ask the dealer to see what's inspected..

Yea...I owned a CPO Lexus, and had another Lexus inspected with their regular checks.  The regular inspection was basically a glorified safety inspection, whereas the CPO inspection was very thorough.  It included looking at the body for dings, scratches, etc.  Interior wear, chassis (and wheel alignment check), test drive for and NVH or rattles, etc...Very thorough.

Don't drink the new car dealer Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) kool-aid. Sold at premium prices, they are marketed as accident-free exhaustively reconditioned creampuffs with comprehensive warranty protection. Warranty fees, deductibles and fine print bafflegab often restrict applicability and payment to a fraction of the repair cost. Skimping and cheating are rampant. Some dealers are selling title-washed, branded, collision damaged, flood soaked cars and U.S. lemon law buybacks and lying through their teeth. A full due diligence process including an independent inspection reduces the risk.

Though I deal with supposedly reputable dealers and will pay a fair price for quality, the cold, hard, high octane fact is the car business is filled with liars, cheats, fraudsters and slimy sons of bitches. A salesman will say anything to get your signature on a contract and his commission. The truth is out there, trust no one!

The worst was a CPO car, accident free according to the sales weasel. CarProof said two repairs totaling $5,500. Just minor dents and scratches from shopping carts he purred, claiming he knew the previous owner personally and his dealership did the repairs. So splain the welds to the trunk floor! Disappointing, I have bought from this dealership previously.

I am sometimes asked to assist friends and relatives purchase cars, three in a little over a year. So far thorough due diligence and independent inspections have paid off. My purchases have all turned out well. Sooner or later, however, I will get burned. It's the law of averages. Not looking forward to it. I have little confidence officialdom will rush to my rescue.

I just bought a 2007 BMW under the their CPO program. In addition to the remainer of the regular 4 year BMW warranty, it has 2 additional years under the CPO program. The inspection done for the CPO program was quite comphrehensive, more than regular maintenance. It included Carfax report. They also did the BMW Service Bulletin for the problem on noisy lifters on the N52 engine, a known problem with that engine. The balance of both BMW and CPO warranty is transferable if I sell the car before the warranty expires.

I have no problem with BMWs CPO program, and I think it is worth the extra money. There may be dealers out there that are less reputable however, so one should consider each case individually.
