1981 Datsun 210 - oh yeah
« on: October 22, 2010, 10:16:29 pm »
I'm the new owner of a Datsun 210 two door sedan. Its a 1.2L, 4spd, base model car. Rubber floor mats and no arm rests. I  doubt there is a single option on it. With being a two door sedan I  wonder if it was cheapest trim of 210 sold. I was told it likely had a  new clutch and needed a starter. I repaired the starter and it runs but  looks like it in fact needs a clutch. Currently looking for one. RockAuto has some clutch kits for $70 which seems to be a good deal. The body is very solid - just a touch of rust on the rear arches.

Its a base car - you can tell by the rubber floor mats instead of carpets and the lack of arm rests on the seats. The dash has some cracks in it.

Cleaned out the trunk - pretty much rust free with just a hint of surface rust in the spare wheel well.

The rear seat was loose so I thought what the heck I'll clean it up a bit.

Great find.  Looks better shape than my old late 80s Datsun/Nissan at 10 years.  Where do you find these things?

Found this one in an alley with a for sale sign.

There is a bill of sale from a father to a son (I assume so since they have the same last name) so it looks like one family may have owned it a long time. The seller I bought it off never drove it he said he saved it after the garage he worked at was going to crush it. The story he told was that someone brought in for a new clutch. After the work was done they never picked it up so the garage owned it. It sat for a few years until the garage was going to crushed it. The seller saved it. He thought the starter was gone but I was able to get that working again. But it was not drivable because the clutch makes an awful noise - so apparently it never got that new clutch. So I guess I'm doing it. Needs tires too but they are dirt cheap.

I bought it for $150 and tow cost $60 so I'm $210 in so far ironically.

Got a few minor things done

Silly door buzzer had its sensor disconnected - must have loosened at some point. So it dinged all the time. Was driving me crazy. Had to remove the glove box to get at it. I fixed it then thought what the hell am I doing and disconnected the whole thing. No more bell ever!

Driver's door panel back on

Did a quick initial clean on the engine way. Quite a difference already.

Wow, remember those days when you could actually get your hands and arms in there with plenty of room to spare?

Notice it states "restored". No doubt the frame rails were replaced. That is the first thing I'd check on  a 240Z.

You sir, are a true hands-on student of automotive history.

What happened to the Ladas? Too hard to get parts? Or just ready for a change?

Sold the red Lada to fix up the white one. Then sold the white one so the family can go on vacation this year.  :(

Datsun was cheap and will keep me busy.

Want a new project rr?
Nice 210 BTW, would make a nice solid project, or just drive it.

Quick, somebody, buy it. The poor thing needs those fart-pipe exhaust tips removed ASAP as a public service.
