Current SUV and Truck Styling
« on: October 18, 2010, 07:50:02 pm »
Okay – so I turn 38 in December but I’m starting to sound like my father.  As a young person, he would tell me how the cars when he was growing up (50-60’s) had more class then cars of today (at that time 80’s and 90’s).

Are SUVs / Trucks getting more ugly?  I think so!  I offer the following:

I actually prefer the 2010 Explorer to the 2011

The first generation Jeep Liberty was much nicer and the models 2008+. I also like the outgoing Grand Cherokee better than the 2011.

The 2010 4 Runner is nicer than 2011.  The 2011 is a scary beast.

What is up with Dodge Trucks?  Durangos and Dakotas of 10 years ago are much more appealing.

Current CR-Vs are far less appealing the first 2 generations.

Am I getting old?

No. You're getting a more mature sensibility.

Well, you're getting older!  Although I'm ahead of you by a bit, I like some new models...and some older ones.

The Dakotas of 10 years ago didn't have much to lose...and as a result, they took a bold move, and sold like crazy.

The CR-V is pretty successful...and as a result, much more boring than that first gen.

Incoming Cherokee is playing the interior card...so more conservative on the outside.

If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

And a review I read said a Toyota 4 Runner was actually more off-road worthy than the new Cherokee...if you can believe that!

FWIW, I really like the exterior styling of the new Cherokee and Explorer.

No, Motor Trend.  It was some new 2011 model for off-roading.  Has locking diff, electronic terrain control stuff, etc..

They said the Cherokee was better on road, and the 4 Runner better off road.

I loved the look of my '98 F150, much more stylish and more retro looking than the current one. Agree on the new 4Runner  ::)
Some new designs are great though, namely the latest stuff from Kia, Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, Charger/Challenger, new Euro Fords and many other I don't recall at the moment. I'd say on average the design trend is positive IMO.

I think retro styling shows a lack of creativity....

No, Motor Trend.

The same publication that named the Camry the best midsized car. Yeah. Right.  ::)

Oh...so does that mean they were wrong to name the CTS car of the year in 2008 then?

I feel the same way.   For ex, I love the previous Tundra - classy but tough.  The new one it just bulbous and ugly.

I do like the new 2011 Grand Cherokee over the last one.  But I think 99-2004 still looks better than the 2005-2010..

I still think the 1997-2001 Cherokee XJ is a really good looking SUV.  Saw a grey one yesterday, which slightly oversized tires and it still looked current to me.

I like trucks to be square and tough (F150 up until 1996, current F Series). Sticking an aeroblob (RX350) up in the air just looks silly to me.

I like the Nitro, which made me the odd man out really, but one of the first things I noticed when I got to Regina is they are all over the place here; two on my rather short street alone.

I always loved the XJ.  I would have replaced it with a Patriot knockoff if it wasn't for the POS NA powertrain (in Europe, they get a 2.2 Mercedes Diesel).  ???

Funny, I’m reading some magazine that declares the Ford Escape a styling relic of a by-gone era.  I think it looks better than most of the “aeroblobs” of today.

SirOsis:

I'll add SubaruOutback to my list of vehicles.  The previous generation is wicked cool; the current one- meh...

It's a wash IMO.

Agreed.

I think the 2011 is handsome but does not stand out among the crowd.

Agreed.  The last attractive 4Runner was back in 2002.

The curent Ram 1500 is Fugly.  The 2500 and 3500 are okay.  The current Durango and Dakota are fugly.

This thing is both retro and stylin',  I agree though, it's hard to make retro work, but those old things seemed to have so much more character.

I like SUVs for their utility, versatility, passenger and cargo space, but I prefer smaller sizes. I like the ones with upright backs like the traditional SUVs (good for cargo space), good ground clearance, good AWD and decent power (small V6) .
This is my idea of a SUV.

Few SUVs I like: Outlander (2007-2009), Forester (2009+), 2011 Explorer.

I also like some of the luxo ones including XC60/XC90, X3/X5, LR2/LR3 and the new Evoque (smallish), Touareg. I also like the design of the CX-7/CX-9.

Me and Lady Osis are both glad we bought ours when we did. The current version does not appeal to us at all.

For the most part I find every new generation looks better than the last.  With a few exceptions I suppose.  Sometimes they take a bit to grow on me but after a year or so I start to really dig them.

I think most designers are pretty genius about it.
