The days of the 3,000 mile/5,000 km are long gone. It's just the quick lube industry and car dealer service departments that are trying to say otherwise. Doing so just reinforces the impression that they are con artists.

Not if you want to keep your Hyundai warranty they are not.

In order to worry about keeping a Hyundai warranty one would first have to own a Hyundai. ;D

Seriously though..... I wonder how much of that Hyundai warranty schedule is really required from an engineering POV and how much is driven by trying to give dealers a boost in service revenue to make up for skinny margins on the cars?

I got sick of this BS too with the gen coupe, especially the recommended brake service every year.

The VW is every 15K, which is a lot more reasonable IMHO.  People should really factor this into the purchasing decision.  Even oil changes on something like a Mazda 3 (0W20 SYN) can really add up over time, due to the high price every 8km, sort of offsets the fuel economy of that high compression engine.

I pay $60-65 taxes included for my Mazda 3 (depending on how much shop fees they decide to charge me that day...). The 12mo/24k service is $235 taxes included.

The local Mazda dealer has a loyalty program with 1/2 price and free oil changes which if you follow through will take the oil changes down to about $45. That's pretty good for 0W20 synthetic I think, as you cannot even buy the oil at that price unless it goes on sale. I have been extending the change interval to 10K. The Brake service is $89 plus tax, again very competitive.

I pay $18 every 15K.  :P

Semi-free oil changes I assume? I can't even do my own oil for that cheap. Well I could if I went with cheap dino oil and Fram filters, but that's not a 15k oil change.

This.

Same thing with Chrysler....the 2012 Jeep Warantee Maintenance Schedule log book only indicates servicing the auto trans at 100K; replacing the sparkplugs at 100K; and the inspecting the fluids in the front and rear unless 'police, towing, off roading' etc.  Oil Changes no more than 8k or six months.

Dealer Service Department has auto trans, plugs and fluid replacements at 50k (half the distance and 'forced' replacement) on the oil changes every 5K - even though it has an engine oil life monitor.  They would have you in for a $400-$600 service every other service interval.

3 year warrantee BtoB is up, heading back to my local favourite Midas for servicing now....

Cheap oil and 15k? What about the filter? Cheap filters typically hold 9-11g of dirt, not enough for 15k.

Ah I forgot about the filter, that's on top, but it's not too expensive.

That is pretty good. Where?

The Nanaimo Mazda dealer. Though that said, once I finish my next free oil change I may switch to doing it myself again 2x/year, about every 12.5k. I saw Canadian Tire had Pennzoil Platinum 0W20 (5L) on sale recently for $32. That and a long life filter (~$10) will make it slightly cheaper annually.

yeah, didn't seem too crazy to me looking at that... just a lot of "inspect" items that i'm sure they'll tell you that you should spend more money... you can just say no to that.

its kind of funny.. we have two different factory reps.. the service guys train the back to tell customers every 3 months or 5000kms is what is best for your car... then in sales, they teach us to push the fact that the car will let you know when to get an oil change and they are not scheduled until the light comes on or 13,000 (16 on some)...

i've seen engines go too long on their oil... i'm going to continue doing it about 8000kms. earlier if it works with my schedule.

and wing.. was that a, "oh snap!".. or a "oh no, my bolts snapped"?
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now
