Just started running into this myself. The manual maintenance schedule seems pretty reasonable for oil changes and maintenance check types of service 6 mo/6000 KM. For oil I like to change it more often then that.   However what I got from the dealer is a recommended service interval for Ontario. I'm at 9 months, 10,000 KM. I can't imagine having my car checked 3 times over this time period

so much of the new maintenance is just inspections... no reason a trusted independent can't do it... if they spot something, sure, send it in to do a warranty job... now i say trusted indie, but there is no reason the trusted shop needs to be.. could be a dealer, could be a crappy tire... all depends on the shop.

the 48km check for nearly a grand... wow... that is steep. unless they were doing other things as well (i've heard lots of customers who don't actually know whats getting done) that is crazy...

I find these service intervals to be excessive. I have a 2013 Chrysler 200 and the recommended service is dictated by the cars EVIC, not to exceed 1 year or 16,000 KM. I use synthetic oil and like to change it every 10,000 KM. I let the car go to 13,000 KM and chickened out and had the oil changed.
The recommended service does not ignore regular oil level checks, tire pressures and fluid checks. My 32,000 check cost $120 at CT and the 48,000 ( done at 45,000) cost $170. This includes the oil changes. Spark plugs are due at 160,000 km.

My Hyundai dealer is trying to push all kinds of maintenance on me every time I take the Gen Coupe in.
Last time (33 months and 49k km) they said the coolant needs replacing. The books says replace coolant at 200k km or 120 months! If they bring it up again, I will tell them that obviously something is wrong with the engine and they should do it under warranty.

The recommended maintenance is certainly something I will be considering before my next purchase. Certainly the lesson I've learned from this one.

Toyota is 6mo/8,000km for newer cars, maybe Honda too? Mazda is 4mo/8,000km -- a little frequent timewise but ok otherwise and the intermediate/major service is only every 12mo/24,000km anyway. 3mo/6,000km would drive me insane. My 2000 Odyssey is 6mo/6,000km and 99 Sienna/91 Corolla/90 Celica were the same.

For anyone who doesn't drive much, look for a 6 month service interval. For anyone who drives a lot, look for an 8,000km+ service interval.

Most new Hondas use a Maintenance Minder system.  It tells you when something is needed.  At a bare minimum, the oil needs to be changed at least once a year.  They use 0W20 synthetic right out of the gate.  My Odyssey is almost due for its first service and I am at almost 11000kms.

I have the dummy maintenance light on my old Honda.  At least it can be reset without a trip to the dealer.

The stealership is trying to make as much money as possible off you. Tell them to pound salt and follow the Hyundai recommended servicing schedule. Remember, you DO NOT have to do anything you don't want to.

Same on the new Hondas.  The owners manual shows you how to reset it.

This.  The service advisors are typically commission based.  The more they can up sell you the better for them.  The Go Auto dealers around the here are really bad for this.

That's true about the commission. A friend was a service advisor for Hyundai and the more he up sold the more he made.

Terrible system IMO.

I've hard 3 Honda's in the last 4 years - Fit, Odyssey and a Crosstour. All 3 had maintenance minder and all 3 managed 11,000km before next service

The kind of service schedule would certainly make me think twice about buying a Hyundai. I drive around 20-22K a year and like the idea of using synthetic and doing service spring and fall at the most.

I got sick of this BS too with the gen coupe, especially the recommended brake service every year.

The VW is every 15K, which is a lot more reasonable IMHO.  People should really factor this into the purchasing decision.  Even oil changes on something like a Mazda 3 (0W20 SYN) can really add up over time, due to the high price every 8km, sort of offsets the fuel economy of that high compression engine.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

Ford's spin on this is perhaps even worse/more misleading IMO

There's a oil minder system that estimates how the engine oil is doing  based on your driving, and interval is between 0 and 16 000 km

However the manual says to do it every 8k km if the system is working, and the dealership is pushing 8k service (of course). How exactly are you supposed to know when it's not working???

Q5 is fixed at 16,000 km OR yearly with a VW compliant 5w-40 or 0w-40 synthetic.   I may do the Q at 8000 kms as I do a lot of trips <10kms from cold in the winter.
The Fit uses a 0w-20 synthetic and  has a maintenance minder system but again it is once a year  for us.   This Fit looks as if the minder will do about 12000 between changes, the 2007 running on dino juice was 8000.

The days of the 3,000 mile/5,000 km are long gone. It's just the quick lube industry and car dealer service departments that are trying to say otherwise. Doing so just reinforces the impression that they are con artists.

Not if you want to keep your Hyundai warranty they are not.
