Regardless of what the manufacturer says, surely it's just common sense?

To qualify for engine warranty Toyota requires oil change at 8K km or 6 mths.

Nissan tolerates 12k km or 6 mths, but "recommends"  6k km or 3 mths. for most Canadian driving.

Personally I think 8K km or 4 mths on dealer dino oil is the best course.

Nissan's service schedule is evrey 6k as well.  I prefer my wife's Fit with the oil life indicated numerically as a decreasing percentage.

Hyundai dealers like to push the "severe service" intervals in Canada.

Perhaps that is a result of the robustness (or lack thereof) of the product. Razors-edge cost engineering can take less abuse, requires more frequent service. Plus if owners fail to do the required schedule Hyundai can weasel out on the warranty.

Or perhaps because Hyundai dealers have suffered thru fairly small margins the company is giving dealers an opportunity to make it up.

And your proof that Hyundai is engaging is "zero-edge cost engineering" is what, exactly?  I mean, apart from your endless store of Asian-hate that you spew liberally with every post?

My Honda service interval is every 8K for Canada.  There is a severe service in the owner's manual for living in places like Flin Flon.

If you prefer a longer service interval, get something German.

Our F150's are pretty long, IIRC 12,000 km in normal service, which would be the same as the 7500 miles mentioned here in the US Ford manual:

Step-daughter calls me this am, almost in tears.
She took her 2012 Elantra in to dealer for 48,000 service, told her it's gonna cost her $975 (!!!)  They want to do a hot oil change (never hear of that), replace all other fluids, do an alignment etc...

Found a factory maintenance schedule that says that service should be around $400.
Told her to call dealer & tell 'em not to touch the car.

Fackers.... :banghead:

Pretty much every oil change should be a hot oil change, but I wouldn't doubt that a lot of places don't care and just drain it regardless (like if you drop it off the night before and they just fire it up for 20 seconds to move it into the service bay.) Cold oil doesn't drain as well, so I'd happily pay a little extra to make sure it's done right.

All fluids at 48k does seem excessive, but brake fluid is probably due (likely been over 2 years.) Alignment may or may not be needed (maybe they saw some odd tire wear?), but lots of people like to get an alignment every year or two, regardless. It's not totally outrageous.

Having said all that, if it were my car, I'd just do what was actually required, i.e. the $400 service. Can't really blame them for trying to upsell, but it sounds like they were probably d-bags about it (step daughter in tears). There's no excuse for that.

Maybe they tried to scare her into thinking it was necessary or else she wouldn't be properly maintaining her car. Good move Weels, tell them to take a hike.

The problem isn't with people like us who know better, but with the unknowing masses who trust the dealerships and take everything they say at face value.  There are so many of those people, and they way the get preyed upon is sickening.

Yup, a friend of mine was just telling me that the local Hyundai dealer got her SUV in every year for a $400 "brake calibration", then she took it to an indy mechanic who told her it looked like the brakes had never been off in years.

My Mazda 3's 48,000km service cost about $320 taxes included. That was for the typical synthetic 0W20 oil change service, then the brake servicing which includes taking the brakes apart to clean the components and lubricate the sliding caliper pins which is recommended every 24,000km, then a bunch of inspections, tighten chassis bolts etc.

$970 is ridiculous. $400 sounds about right. I don't know if I got a discount because I brought a dozen donuts from Tim Horton's in which I typically do even with a $60 (taxes in) oil change service.

Amazing. I bought a new Honda Accord back in 2000. According to dealer lots of service checks required. Wanted to align wheels, check and clean brakes and all sorts of other things. I had a 97 Acura EL and had similar experience at dealership. Once at Acura I got about $800 worth of work done. At same time I mention the dome light was out inside car (I just never got around to changing it myself). I got my bill and it was itemized that I paid $11 in labour to change the light.

Now that I have a BMW with mtce included suddenly almost nothing needs to be done. According to BMW the brakes even clean themselves. Funny how things change when I am not on hook for bill. I am sure at the end of the 4 year warranty there will be lot of chargeable items.

Back to Honda. It was a long time ago but I remember the 48,000 kms check was going to cost about $400. The long list of things done looked impressive until you read it. Check wipers, check lights, check windshield washer fluid level and on and on with a bunch of crap like that just to make the list look long. I brought it to my indi mechanic and had whole thing done for $70.00.

I also now go to and independent tire store. I buy my tires there. I have had my wheel alignment checked 3 times on my Mazda over the years. Never yet been charged because when they put it on machine the alignment was fine and no adjustment needed. Do you think that would happen at a dealership. I think not.
If you want more in life you have to make an effort.
