anti theft on used cars
« on: October 05, 2010, 11:22:36 pm »
Good evening all.

I recently bought an off-lease 2007 Accord from a Honda dearer. As much as I tried to waive it, they managed to sell me the anti-theft device ($500). As an afterthought I realized that someone (the person who had leased it) had already paid for anti theft. Is this a normal practice or have I been scammed by the dealer?

Thanks.

Hi, we will need a bit more information.  What exactly is the anti-theft device you were sold?  Aftermarket alarm?  What was the anti-theft device the previous owner paid for?

I guess I should have been more specific. Some manufacturers (Honda) among them install anti-theft tracking devices. They apparently increase the probability of tracking stolen vehicles.
They stuck it inside my mom's brand new CRV, but that I could understand, it's brand new.
In my case, a 3-year old Accord is also equipped with one, and I am pretty sure that the person who leased it, had paid for it. I don't know for certain though, but I am pretty sure that they included it in the lease cost.

You were scammed.

If its a physical device they can INSTALL then it can be UNISTALLED. I can only assume that the $500 is for the "tracking" contract for them to enable the service that tracks the car should it be stolen (some kind of lojack tyoe system). If you didn't want it they could simply not turn the system on and it would be a lump of useless electronics sitting in the car not hurting anything.

Don't know if you have signed a contract for it etc but from the sounds of it you got scammed and should have said" I don't want it..either remove the device and the $500 fee with it, leave the device in and don't activate it or don't sell me the car I'll go buy one elsewhere.

Sorry

Do you have bad credit? If you do,it may have been put in because the lender wanted to reduce there risk. We put it in some of our high risk subprime buyers.
