.....

I can't go through the oil consumption tests/ constant checking of oil levels again.  I can't believe my luck.

If the dipstick shows zero, does it mean there was no oil in the engine or it was down to 50% capacity?  Some of the forums seem to indicate a quart usage between changes is pretty normal.

How often do you need to check the oil before it becomes "constant"?  5,000 km is a long time in my books.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

Best case scenario is that it was low when purchased, and that you burned just enough so it doesn't show on the dipstick.  Or maybe you have a leaking seal/gasket.  Hopefully its not burning through a couple litres every 5k.

Wow!  How gentle were you when you broke in in?  I remember when I bought my RSX Type S, a friend of mine had an Intergra Type R.  He warned me about going easy breaking it in.  He didn't go easy on his, not even close.  By the time it had about 15,000km's on it, it was burning oil quite badly.

Ugh !  My new 2010 Civic Si has 4700 kms.  Last night on the way home from work the oil light came on.  This morning I checked the oil level, and not a drop on the dipstick- out of oil.

If the light comes of for low oil level you might be alright.  If it comes on for low oil pressure then driving it home probably killed  or severely maimed that engine.

Thanks for the feedback.  Good news is I did get a complimentary oil and filter change from Honda.   I am on a 1500 km oil consumption test.  The Service Manager said he remembered me from my 2002 Civic SiR oil burner.  He was quite surprised that the only two Civics that have had oil consumption issues in the last seven years both belonged to me.

I was talking to the salesman and he said "you weren't redlining it like I said before the first oil change, right ?" I swear to God I thought he said "be sure to redline it before the first oil change".  JK.

No I'll bring it in after 1500 kms and if the oil is down I think I'll just get a cash refund and buy something else.  I just checked and I still have the receipt.  I am sure the dealership doesn't want to inconvenience a customer.

Thank you.   Go Honda !  Too bad, I LOVE the car.

You're kidding, right?

I doubt that Honda will just hand you you're money back to buy something else.

Hi, No I am not kidding.  I financed it through Honda Canada, so if I don't make the payments wouldn't they just come to my house and get it ?   I'll save them the step, and bring it right back where it came from.   What's the worst that could happen ?

I thought you were kidding about having the receipt.  I would hope that on a large purchase like this you would still have the bill of sale.

About returning the car... Every manufacturer has an allowable limit for oil consumption.  If you are within that allowable limit, you'll just have to check the oil and add if need be.  I don't know what it is for your Si.  If you are above that allowable limit, I highly doubt that the will take the car back a give a full refund.  Best case scenario is they replace the engine under warranty.

Maybe articsteve can chime in on what you can expect.
