The current forester needs 89 octane?  I didn't know that.

I did hear from a dude up the steet that sells subies that the new engine will have a timing chain and require 0W20 oil.  Arrival is expected near the end of November.

Yup, timing chain for sure.

The "official" word from Subaru as per the owners manual is that 87 octane fuel is all that is required.  But users experience has shown that 87 will allow some level of "ping/knock" that goes away with 89.  More info here if you are interested:

It is something I have noticed as well, especially as the kms roll up (61,000 now).

I hadn't heard that one before.  We've got just over 36,000 km's on our '09 Forester and I've never heard it knock or ping.  We've only ever put 87 octane in it.

First heard it in my 09 this summer, at about the 50,000 km mark.  89 octane takes care of it.

Can,t say I heard any pinging too. Only been using 89 octane since I bought my 09. I wonder if people experience the problem with certain brands of fuel.

Shouldn't hear any ping/knock with 89 octane, the issue is with the recommended 87 (regular) fuel.  As I noted, my ping goes away with 89.

Here's the latest news.  The salesman up the road is doing his best to get me to "ditch the Jeeps".  He makes a compelling argument ;)

Sadly, the recall is for the Grand Cherokee.  I have one of the last XJs ever built and it's over 10 years old.  I think they are off the hook.

With the 11+" of ground clearence, I've often thought that a Civic could slide right underneath and take out the fuel tank.  I doubt the skid plate would offer much protection.  Hey - the XJ was designed in 1983 and was never really changed!
