Well we have plenty of replies in a short time and I never bothered to read them all.  So if this has been mentioned......

Here's what I do to stay alive:
When riding on a 2-lane road, stay in the left track, directly behind a cars driver side mirror.
When riding on a 4-lane road, two lanes on your side, ride in the left track when in the right hand lane.  Ride in the right hand track when in the left lane.  This allows you to protect our lane from cages that may want to squeeze into your lane.   Because if you don't position yourself to protect your lane, someone (in an SUV) will eventually want that lane.

As for running with high beams, that depends on the quality of your lights.  I have an 1800 Gold Wing, with low and high beams that are as good or better than many cars and nothing pisses me off more than seeing other Wingers with their high beams on.  Those lights are blinding, and when they are approaching you there is no way you can look at them.  You are forced to look away.  Not exactly what the oncoming rider has in mind.
Even my lows are sometimes too bright, but I do have the ability to adjust them, even while riding.
If god didn't want us to eat baby animals, he wouldn't have made them so tastey.
