Typical oil change interval

Can we extend past 5000 km with dino oil?  Is the 5000 km rule of thumb actually 5000 miles dating from the years prior to Canada's switch to metric?

If you are fortunate to have an OLM (Oil Life Monitor) then I do suggest you take its advice; which depending on your driving style will almost for sure take you way past the 5k km mark.

Our Fit has a maintenance minder that comes up with 8000 km per oil change with conventional oil.

Our 2000 Audi A4 was  1st change at 8000 and then every 16000 km on conventional.   My BMW  was 25000 on syn and the GTI is 1st 8000 and then 16000 on syn.  I do the GTI at 8000 and the Fit once a year on its birthday...which turns out to be every 5-6000 km.

I thought that the old 5000 miles had become 8000 km in general.

I figured 8,000 was the norm.  Thats what the interval has been on our '01 Civic.
I just go by the idiot light on the TL when it says it wants service - - that has been in the 8 - 10,000 km range since i've had it

Our Fit has a maintenance minder that comes up with 8000 km per oil change with conventional oil.

And of course the OLM system in your car has no idea if there is dino or synthetic oil in the sump. It will count down % the same way regardless of what is in the sump.

I thought that the old 5000 miles had become 8000 km in general.

As a rule of thumb I agree.

I would guess the OLM is assuming I are using the type of oil that is called for. (In this case Mobil1 5w30 in the SRX) I seem to be getting 15-20k on the OLM although I tend to do the change early if I'm in for other service or tire changeover.

Mazda3 asks for 8000km and the Outlander 6000km. I started to do them between 5000-6000 km on regular oil.

The Volvo V70R had an oil quality sensor as well as level sensor. The quality sensor rarely came on before the 8k km interval that I used. The new to me G8 has an oil life monitor. With the 8.2L sump this interval could easily be past the 12k km mark.

16K on the VW.   I do every 10K since it is easier for me to remember.

6000 km's for the Versa. It's a little over-due right now so I'd better call the Nissan store for an appointment this week. Thanks for reminding me!  ;D

Non-technical assessment here.

On the 2007 Toyota Camry. After 6000 km on dino oil, the engine wouldn't run as smoothly. I always changed oil right after that. The recommended oil change interval was 8000km by the dealer and manufacturer.

On my currenct car, 1997 Chrysler Interpid - The official recommended oil change interval is 4800km. Marked difference in engine operating 'smoothness' after 4000 km.

8000km may be the technical interval, but I am skeptical based on an old and a modern engine.

I wish my car had an OLM instead of an obsolete fixed 6000 km OCI.

I did an 10179 km dino OCI with the Sonata this summer which was well above the 6000 recommendation and the oil looked almost new at the end.  But it was a summer OCI that spanned less than 3 months and incuded a 5500 Km trip to Florida in 14 days.  If the car had an OLM, I'm pretty sure it would have indicated perhaps 25% remaining.

OTOH, 6000 Km during the winter months and for short trips would be plenty enough.

I'm still a believer of old school in this area, every 3 months or 5000 kms whichever is first. Dino or synthetic doesn't make that much of a difference. Your engine won't decide run cleaner because you spent more money on the oil. The same amount of carbon, acids, and wear materials get into to the oil at the same rate regardless of the brand you buy, the additive packages between a synthetic oil and dino aren't much different. Think of it the same you would the water in your toilet, Swiss Alps spring water or city of Moncton tap water, you still flush when your done. The more often you change the oil, the cleaner and happier your engine going to be.

As far as I can see the (mk1) FIT is a fixed 8000 km and counts down at 10% every 1200 km.

FWIW BMW pre 2003 had a complex system that counted cold starts, max engine temps and stuff... BMW engineers found that  a simple formula that counted the total amount of fuel through the engine  adjusted for the engine size  worked just as well for 2003.    I believe that they changed this again for 2005 on with the engines that had no manual dipstick...Ovr will know.

Interesting.    On the original mini with the gearbox sharing engine oil ( 20w-50 treacle) that was very noticeable as the gear teeth chewed up some of the long chain molecules in the oil very quickly and the oil went from 20w-50 to something else in a couple of thousand miles.

Just looked it up online for the Sonata in the american manual. It says to change the oil every 12,000km, but here's the twist... they have a 'severe' maintenance schedule that shows to change the oil every 4,800km. Here's what they describe as 'severe' driving conditions:
A - Repeatedly driving short distance of less than 5miles (8km) in normal temperature or less than 10miles (16km) in freezing temperature
B - Extensive engine idling or low speed driving for long distances
C - Driving on rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled or saltspread roads
D - Driving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather
E - Driving in sandy areas
F - Driving in heavy traffic area over 90°F (32°C)
G - Driving on uphill, downhill, or mountain road
H - Towing a Trailer, or using a camper, or roof rack
I - Driving as a patrol car, taxi, other commercial use or vehicle towing
J - Driving over 100 MPH (170 Km/h)
K - Frequently driving in stop-and-go conditions

According to those, should I assume that I'd be better off sticking with a 6,000km interval during winter months and lenghtening that closer to 12,000km during warmer month?

I change between 5-6K.  I have no idea why - i've always done this. Simple dino oil

Tranny, transfer case, diffs, coolant, regular copper plugs every 50K

Seems to work - 240K and counting

In my Sebring, 2.4L - four cylinder, I use synthetic and change the oil in spring and fall, which equals about 6,000 km.

Had an oil change done today. The previous owner had serviced the car at 80000 km a year and a half ago, the car now has 103000 km. Put Mobil 1 0W-40 long life oil in. Will see if I'll stick to the service indicator recommendation for the next service, which is once every 25000 km or two years, or have the oil changed in a year.

Can we extend past 5000 km with dino oil?

Owner's Manuals usually have recommended service intervals split into two driving conditions; normal and severe.

What does your manual state?

I run between 10-12K kms on Mobil 1 which is being easy on the oil. In Europe, they 20K kms on synthetic under far more severe driving conditions.
