Blue Jeans Dye Stain on Grey Leather
« on: September 25, 2010, 02:03:29 am »
Does anyone know how to get blue jeans dye stain off of leather?  Friend of mine sat in my new car with grey leather and left an ugly blue stain on the side bolster on and on the seat.  I got the stain off the seat cushion using Armor All Leather cleaner, but can't seem to get all of it off the side bolster now matter how much I rub & wipe....the side bolster seems to be made of a softer leather than the cushion.

Thanks

Magic Eraser might work.

On various BMW forums, I have read of owners with cream or white leather getting blue jean stains on it. I don't have a specific link for you, but you might try searching several BMW forums and see if you can find it. The light leathers look great, but maintenance of them is a PITA. Good luck.

One known trick (and I've used it myself on a couple of customer cars) for removing ink stains and other discolourations is to spray the area with hairspray.  Then wipe it off with a clean cloth.  If that does not work, I would visit a local shoe repair shop and pick up a leather spray designed to restore colour on leather.  There are all different colours, so just choose the colour that resembles your leather the best.

Careener's idea about using a magic eraser might work as well, however I've never tried it.

I used magic eraser on a leather couch and it worked great.

I've used Magic Eraser on my seats too.  I got that tip from an interior shop in Aurora who said they prep show cars with the stuff.

Just keep the surface wet, and you won't have an issue.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

Just for kicks, I just dabbed a little bit of ink on the leather seats of my G and tried the magic eraser.  It removed some, but not nearly all.  I then used my wife's hairspray, wiped it off with a clean cloth and viola, all gone.  It all depends on the type of stain within the leather.  I've never had (or a customer vehicle) with the blue jean dye stain, but I would certainly give the magic eraser or hairspray a try.

Thanks guys.  I will give the your suggestions a try.  I spoke to the dealer and they've convinced me to Diamond Kote the interior so this won't happen again.

There are two ways to remove the dye stains as discuss here so far; by abrasive etching like the ME; by dissolving the top coat with the alcohol content from the hairspray; or a combination of both.

Well it may work; only sacrificing the topcoat that need to be recoated used by the original OEM; when ignored will leave the area color coat exposed without the original topcoat.

So is its a holistic approach to solve the problem? No! Just a trade-off - out of the frying pans into the fire!

What is the best solution to remove the dye stain without causing damages to the finish; is to use a leather-safe removal product.

Hi Roger,

I suspect the dealership might have used the ME on the side bolster as the area that had the stain is smoother and more prone to wrinkle than the rest of the leather.  Do you think this was due to the topcoat being taken off? If so, is it possible to restore so that area feels the same as the rest?

It would be better if you have pictures to refer to.

Besides the topcoat which comes as a water-based Urethane it has to match the original with a testing; and this topcoat comes in Gloss, Satin and Matte. Hard to decide which level of gloss until you are satisfied with the testing.

Another note is that the grains may have been flatten; and there is nothing to do about it.

Prone to wrinkle is associated with drying of the original fatliquor (fat, oil and water); and this can be replenished with an anionic fatliquor.

That's why it is always safer to use a tested Leather-Safe system.

Dye-transfer from blue jean is certainly removed entirely without damages to the topcoats.

Another seemingly tough dye transfer is from "leather belts" mostly from man; and this have been proven that it can be removed "leather-safe".

Ball point pen leak into the leather seats has also be removed- safely.

So Cheer-Up!

With the latest breakthrough you do not need the out of date destructive "ME" or hairspray.

I saw some white seats in an Audi at the Autoshow turn very blue.  I'd never get white leather.
