Another What Car Thread! Help Me Spend My $$
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:53:01 pm »
OK, i'm 5-6 months away from having to make a move on a new car, but of course the wheels are spinning.  Last 2 cars have been Acura's that have treated me generally well, but this time I definitely want something different.

Without having driven any of the contenders yet, this is what i'm thinking as of now:

VW GTI (4 door)
BMW 328 (maybe 335 ??)
Infiniti G37 (maybe G37S ??)
Ford Fusion Sport
Hyundai Sonata Turbo
Buick Regal Turbo

The GTI is at the top of the list at the moment, closely followed by BMW.  The GTI is the one that gives me "that feeling" right now, and I know that once I try one out i'll love it - but i'm sure i'll like the BMW, Infiniti and Fusion Sport a lot too.  The Sonata and Regal are long-shots.  I will post my test drive impressions when I get around to that...

The GTI has one problem though (albeit with a fun remedy...) in that it is cursed with the ugliest wheels on any car.  The remedy of course would be swap 'em with some aftermarkets!  The stock wheels would be relegated to winter slush duty.

So, i've been poking around looking at some wheel options and found these - which I think are stunning:

O.Z. Ultraleggera's in Matte Graphite Silver

What ya think?  Anyone seen any others that are similar?   Did I mention that I think these look freakin' awesome?
I'd want something in a matte silver/grey finish... don't want anything blingy or black.

Why not keep it within the Honda family?

 @ CR-Z ^^^. My top 3 would be #3, #2, and #1, if I had enough change in my pockets.

p.s. Those rims look awesome on GTI

Which GTI wheel don't you like? The 18 inch detroit or the 17s? Most people really like the 18s they are certainly a unique design in a world of lots of chrome and thing with many spokes aftermarket rims.

The ford fusion sport isn't a bad car. Brakes a a bit weak for such a car though so that's something to remember but I'd guess they work well enough.

You are doing what I was doing before which is cross shopping across class of cars. It's going to drive you nuts. First decide on a class to narrow down the choices.

So you haven't even decided on a car, yet you're already shopping for wheels for a GTI?  ???  :rofl2: :stick:

I agree the Ultraleggeras are really nice, but I went with Alleggeritas for mine. Mainly because I wanted 17s, which aren't available in the Ultras, but also because I really like the no-nonsense look and function-over-form priorities of the super lightweight Alleggeritas.

Either way, I do love the look of grey wheels. I went with Anthracite for mine because I thought a shinier finish would work better with the metallic paint on the car, but a matte grey finish would probably look sharp on a white car.

I should probably get around to taking some nicer photos one day, but this will have to do for now.

I agree, but maybe he needs a hatchback or only wants to spend $30K?

It is an odd list, though. Since sedans and coupes seem to be fine, my first choice would be 3-Series, G37S second, and maybe toss the 1-Series in there if price is a big factor.

If coupes are ok, look at one of these:

412hp for $35k? How great a deal is that? ;D

How can the budget be $30K with a 335 and a G37S on the list?

I agree with SirO, don't forget the 5.0!

How else can the GTI be first choice with a 335 and G37S on the list?  ???

And +2 on the Mustang suggestion!

All those cars have local dealers except BMW. Its either Waterloo or Oakville if it breaks.

Guelph VW seems a friendly and competent shop and Georgetown VW with the APR dealer out the back of the building is not far.

The G37 would be second on my list.

Will the Focus with the ecoboost 2.0 be available in your time slot ?

Ya, I know its a mish-mash of a list... honestly, its probably between the GTI and 328, and mayyybe  the G37.  Don't really want a 2 door, although do agree the 'Stang is a nice choice, and that 5.0 would be awfully addictive...

Budget is in the $40-$50K range, which rules out the G37S and 335, but you know if you get behind the wheel of one of those the heart quicky overrules the brain (and wallet...)

The GTI as I mentioned, i really love.  Fully loaded around $37K leaves room for aftermarket goodies.  If I go the BMW route, will likely end up leasing, which i'd rather not do.

If you could find a CPO 335 that is 1 or 2 years old that would be sweet!

If that's the budget I'd go for the Mustang.  My kids have to learn to do the coupe crunch to get in to Daddy's car, dem's just the rules.

Yes,,, a CPO 335 could work... ;D  Maybe Julie can sell me hers when she moves up to an M3.... :shuffle:

I'm being too practical here but wouldn't the additional insurance cost for a Mustang 5.0 raise the monthly cash outlay significantly compared to the other vehicles?

Assuming NEW AND $40-$50K budget (335 and G37S out) AND options listed AND the type of car you currently drive, I'd say G37.
However, if your heart is set on the GTI I'd say go for it (mine is too, so I'm bias here).
