We all know Hyundai has pulled a 180-degree turn in brand image over the past few years, but alas, no one (including Ferrari) is immune to the threat of recalls. The NHTSA has recently begun a preliminary investigation of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata for an issue with the steering system. Approximately 16,300 of the Alabama-built units could be affected, although there have been no official complaints, injuries, or accidents yet.

According to the NHTSA, "the intermediate steering shaft assembly upper universal joint" can fully detach or a "cross-threaded pinch bolt" could strip upper universal joint connection threads; both these issues could lead to a loss of, or faulty, steering.

Regulators also mentioned the steering problem could lead to a "compromised brake system", a case in which the shaft drops out and could hinder brake application.

Thankfully, this is being caught and handled early on. The last thing Hyundai needs is a major safety hiccup as it expands its range into Lexus territory and hopes to bring out a new Azera in 2012.

IMO the subject should read smth like "Hyundai is about to start killing puppies" It would make even more damage.

Get used to it.  All of the manufacturers are scare $hitless about the ghost hunt that Toyota had to go through.  I can foresee recalls being made because of a loose thread on seat stitching...... ;)

Yea..they found people had the accelerator pushed down instead of the brake at the time of the accidents (that's what the black box said).

Come to think about it, Hyundai is becoming too successful with the Sonata and other latest designs. They even had to move Santa Fe to the new Kia plant in order to get more manufacturing capacity for the increasingly popular Sonata; couldn't keep up with the demand. But guess what, every one more sold Sonata is an unsold "domestic" together with their union and direct government sponsorship. Neither of the latter two are in business to lose money, nor can they make a cheaper and more appealing car for the consumer. So the last resort is a well staged smear campaign. It worked on Toyota, it is bound to work on many other competitors.
Remember a few days ago in another thread it was mentioned CARB decided to not allow hybrids to use HOV lanes any more since at highway speeds those are the same pollutants with maybe slightly better mileage. So they were about to give the privilege to the true electrics alone, thus pushing the hybrid Volt right in a ditch.  I said then it is a matter of one phone call to the governator. Whether he got one or not, but today comes the news CARB with a bit of convincing lobbying has decided to extend HOV use for hybrids of all kinds.
It just goes to show how to "git 'er done" in the corporate states of America and how deeply economical, personal and political interests get interwoven. 2 cents. Over.

 :shake:

Automakers have always been scares $hitless of NHTSA since it's very earliest days. Nothing new there. The media storm is becoming worse following a major recall, just like it is for almost everything else. The 24hr news cycle means they have to throw something on the air, might as well be a story about an evil car company killing unsuspecting "regular folk".

By law manufacturers are obligated to report possible safety issues the manufacturer discovers. In this case, Hyundai's QC procedures found the issue, they reported it, and are instituting a recall. Happens to the best of them. Kudos for doing it promptly.

That's too bad for Hyundai. Yep, there should do a recall on the production of Sonata before something bad happens.
