EPIC Day
« on: August 15, 2010, 08:53:27 pm »
OK, so here goes.  GD, Dave, Justin and I went to GTA Exotics recently to take part in their supercar day: http://www.gtaexotics.ca/dev/the-ultimate-exotic-car-experience.html

It costs about $450 each and you spend the day driving on some great roads in Ontario, taking turns in each car. It was a fantastic day indeed!  The cars are a little weather beaten, and most have their performance limited in some way, but it was still a fantastic experience.  As others on the day also said though, I probably would have paid double for nicer spec/unlimited cars.  So don't go there with expectations of revving a Ferrari to the redline, it doesn't get there, which was disappointing.

I'm sure the others will also chime in with their views on the day, more pics, and their particular favourites.  On the cars, so we drove:

Ferrari 360: As I said rev limited to 5.5k which sort of ruined it, plus flappy paddle which was pretty crap.  Overall disappointing, I had much greater expectations.  I have driven a new manual one on the track which was a much nicer experience.

Lambo Gallardo: A wonderful car, very luxurious inside, a true supercar.  Again limited acceleration due to possibly a plate under the go pedal (same on most except the Ferrari which was programmed).  Very nice, but with the limiter a bit slower than it should have been.  I looked at Jeff after pulling away and said, "is that it?"  I was expecting it to be ferocious!

NSX: The surprise of the day.  Again rental spec but the steering and handling were just immense!  I would go so far as to say the best handling car there.  Plus you can actually use most of the power on public roads.  I want one.

Corvette: Auto. Convertible.  :-[  But.  The only one that I don't think was limited in any way, therefore probably the fastest there!  The look on Jeff's face when I floored it after first getting in was hilarious, he wanted to hate it so much.  :rofl2:  Truly a grand tourer, crap seats that let you slide around, but still great performance.  A manual coupe must be great fun.  Handling was a little wallowy for my liking but I would get one with stiffer suspension.

And finally...
Viper: Again limited, our first choice due to the fact we knew it would be hot later on.  I know many didn't like it, but I loved it. It's insane, I would love to try the full fat experience.  I always wanted the coupe but given how frickin' hot the thing was at the end of the day I would get the soft top.  Awesome car, loved it.

It's very difficult to say which car was better than another due to the limitations of the fleet, my favourite drive was in the NSX where a couple of perfect heel & toe downshifts totally made my day!  :)  The Viper was an experience to behold, the Lambo pure luxury, and the Corvette a nice performance surprise. However the Ferrari was disappointing, and the 911TT blew the clutch so we couldn't drive that one.

Some pics.

Would I recommend it? Yes, if you want a great day driving great cars with great people.  But if you are going there with the intent of "experiencing" a Ferrari or Lambo, you will be disappointed.  For $450 though it was a hoot!!

 ;D ;D ;D

I remember that day, June 14th. $400 to live the life of exotic car ownership for a fleeting moment. :skid:

Amazing that the NSX is the handling champ...a pretty old car no?

I was talking to a couple that went there recently...they say the NSX was involved in an accident....not a bad one...but wrecked the whole side of the car apparently.
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

For me anyways. Funnily enough, the Evora that I drove recently handled exactly the same, good enough for me!  I just wish I would be able to find a good one in a few years (say 5-10), doubt it though.

The thing I really liked about the NSX is that you can really push it on public roads and not be into silly speeds, plus the heavy steering was a godsend.  Sports cars are supposed to be driven hard, anything with more power needs a track, this you could enjoy every day.

Sounds like fun, but I hope they told you in advance that the cars would be castrated: a Ferrari rev-limited to 5,500 rpm makes baby Jesus cry.  :'(

Not that you still couldn't lose your license in any of those cars. Was there a company driver in front to set the pace, or were you guys free to be as stupid with the cars as you wanted to?  :)

IIRC, there's a company in the States that does something similar for upwards of $1,500. I wonder if you get the real-deal cars for that price?

Here's a 1998 NSX-T - 37,000 miles...$44,000.  Seems like a lot...although, funnily enough, I would have less fear of using (and fixing) this car than a 2005 Porsche 911.

Will do Rob. Yes but TG I won't be in a position to buy a two seater for about 10 years when it will be very difficult to find a good one.

Oh, I wasn't posting for you TB...I was adding another car to look at that I'll never buy.   ;D

Surprisingly, I managed to get "spousal approval" when I pitched the two-seater and rent-a-car-for-long-trips combo platter.  After all, it's only me and my boy in the car 90% of the time.

Hmm.....
