OK to go 2" smaller on winter tires?
« on: August 13, 2010, 04:52:41 pm »
I just bought a new vehicle with P235/55R18 tires on it. I know it's only August, but I'm thinking about ordering some winter tires and rims before fall, so I don't have to worry about it later. I plan to definitely go a smaller size, so either P225/65R17 or P215/70R16 are OK, I think. Lots of people recommend going 1 inch smaller, but how about 2 inches? What do you recommend?

Will the 16" wheels fit over the brakes?

You don't say what vehicle it is.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Sounds like a small SUV, Acura RDX maybe?

215/70R16 comes in about 1/4" shorter OD which is good. Of course this is assuming 16" will fit, otherwise 215/65R17 may be the way to go.
