newbie looking for some help!
« on: August 10, 2010, 01:59:18 pm »
Hello Everyone! We are looking to buy a used SUV and need some advice one which ones are good/bad!
My husband was in a car accident and we are now we do not have much time to research, so any advice/help is greatly appreciated. We originally had a car, but are wanting to get an suv.
So what suv is known for the least problems, but can also get a good deal on?

Welcome to the forum.  If you used to have a car then I'll assume that you want some sort of CUV.  Are you looking for something compact or larger?  What is your price range?

The Toyota Highlander is a well made vehicle, but used prices are high.  A Hyundai Tuscon or Kia Sportage might be a good bet at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the quick reply! To be honest I do not know anything about cars! What is a CUV? LOL
I was originally looking at the Santa Fe but price wise I haven't really seen anything good. Then I was looking at the Escape as the prices seem pretty decent, but i'm unsure about them.
I'm still waiting to hear how much i'm getting from the insurance company for my old car to know how much I can put down on the new one. I'm hoping to get one somewhere between 10-15 although I don't know if i'm wishing or if i can get something for that price that's good. Thanks for the help! :)

CUV = Crossover Utility Vehicle (CRV, RAV4. etc)

Can I ask why you want a CUV/SUV now over a car? IE: Pulling a trailer?

A subwoofer should only be noticed once it has been turned off.

We are planning on starting a family very soon and figured we should upgrade to something larger now rather then buy a car now and then end up buying a SUV later. Both me and hubby don't really want a van, we both would prefer to buy an SUV. Thanks for the meaning of CUV :)

You'll probably get lots of suggestions here, but if your budget is ~ 15K, then you're likely looking at:

Hyundai Tucson
Kia Sportage
Ford Escape (4 Cyl only - best to avoid the V6)
Mazda Tribute (same comment as Escape)

For any Toyota RAV4's or Honda CRV's you will have a hard time finding one that does not have a ton of mileage in that price range.

What was your previous vehicle?

We had a Mazda Protege, it was my first car that I bought!
I looked at the Escape last night, and they seem nice. Like I said before though i don't know anything about cars/SUV's to know which are good/bad. At this point we want something that won't cause us any problems for awhile as we can't really afford that right now. My mechanic was telling me something about the Escape how some parts in the older models are in weird spots which can cost us more on labour? Not sure if i'm saying that right or even if what he said was correct?

I know its not a CUV/SUV but how about a Mazda6 Wagon? Equal or more space than most CUVs. Should be able to get the last model year (2006?) easily for that price.

In general SUV are expensive to own and operate.  They cost more in gas have 4x as many moving parts and require maintenance most cars don't (2 differentials, transfer case, transmission and engine - all need oil changes).  They will break more often then cars.   If you can't afford to maintain them, you are in a world of heart-break. They also burn way more gas than cars.  My Cherokee - which is actually shorter than my wife's Civic, burns 1.65X more gas in ideal highway conditions and almost 2x more gas in the city.  If budget is a concern and you don't need (or use) 4wd, it's a big expense.

If you HAVE to have one, consider the following:  If cost is an issue, look for a highly rated domestic - like a Ford Escape - as depreciation is steeper and you will pay less for a used one up front.  Replacement parts are cheaper and they are more plentiful - any local mechanic can fix these.  Good Japanese units, like the Pathfinder, Toyota 4 Runner, Subuaru Forester and Honda CR-V will cost you more up front and parts can be dear.  The Nissan dealers in my part of the world are out to empty your pockets.

I think all things considered, the Escape is a good combination of reasonable reliabilty, quick depreciation and cheaper parts. Used Hyundias and Kias can be decent bets too.

If not towing or going in deep snow or mud, avoid truck-based units like Ford Explorer, Chey Tahoe, Jeep Liberty/Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, etc.

+1 for the Mazda 6 wagon. A better used deal is impossible to find right now.

Thank you so much for the info saint_satan!!!
I had no idea on how much more expensive an SUV can be. Now I figured it would be more on gas as it's larger but didn't know about the rest of it. This might not be the best place to ask, but what about vans??? Although we don't want a van I'm curious to know if they are in the same boat as the SUV? I'm also going to look at the Mazda 6 wagon online today to see what its all about.

Ok so i've been looking online, and once again I don't know if this is the right spot to be asking, but what about the Mazda 5?
It says it's a mini minivan and from the pictures it looks nice! Alot better then an actual van for sure! Anyone have any input on this one?

If you liked the Protege then you would probably like the 5

Its a decent van - the only complaint i've heard of with these is that the 4 cyl engine is a bit underpowered.

I really like the Mazda5 for its size and being very functional. I have driven a 2005 version that had the 4 speed auto and enjoyed it quite a bit. At the time I was driving a Mazda6 wagon which is a much faster car but I never felt that the Mazda5 was underpowered.

I had the Mazda5 for 3 hours and drove through the city and hwy giving it a good test. If you are looking for a small sized van/large sized car this is a great fit.

Do yourself a favor and take one for a drive. Also check out the similar Kia Rondo.

Thanks so much for all your help! We will go drive one this weekend! It's been hard to do good research and figure everything else out insurance wise and we only have the rental car for so long so we need to buy something soon! Your help has been so appreciated! :)
