Manual shift or auto?

Pro-4 option includes very good sound system and better rubber among other things.

Basically a loaded Frontier.

Cannot really be compared to an FJ.  Too different.

Are they really that different? To me, it seems these are the last SUVS that can actually go off-road. I'm looking towards an auto transmission.

How long have you driven each?

The manual 6 speed FJ is quite a different drive than the automatic.  The "operating" difference between either of them and the Xtrail is even more of a difference.

The FJ is just simply a larger drive.  It's harder to hold on the highway in strong winds.  The stock tires are useless.  You need to take them off, store them, and reinstall when you sell it.

The Xtrail with the off road package is more conventional obviously and more urban friendly.  We had a 2008 FJ that we brutalized, floated in water propelled by the wheels.  The bottom was just smashed to crap and it still ran like a champ until it caught on fire.  ;)

I would not recommend an FJ for urban use.  The units with the roof racks, which is a Canadian thing primarily, won't go in many underground parking lots.  :P

The X trail is probably more suitable for running around Ottawa, but still tackling most off road.  Put a Warren winch on it.

Really?  My Forester has a full size roof box on top of the roof rails and fits in every parkade I've tried.

A who/what?

I'd go with...

The FJ cruiser is a full foot taller than your Forester.

Yeah, but then I have a big roof box, which would bring the height of the Forester at least to the same height as the FJ.

The Forester is 1 foot shorter than the FJ.  Neither of them have a roof box at this point.

What I'm saying is that my Forester, WITH the box, has never failed to fit in a parkade, so I think an FJ, sans box, should too.  An FJ is <72" tall, add 3-4" for the roof rack, and at less than 6'6", it should fit in most parking structures.

The roof rack is quite a spell higher than 3-4".  Have a lookie:  http://trucks.about.com/library/graphics/07_fj_cruiser_roofrack.jpg

Yes really.  Your Forester with box is still no FJ.  Sorry.

FJ with factory rack at high point at the rear cross bar is 78 inches.  I believe the rack is offically 6 3/4 inches.

Many of the older downtown Toronto hotels that have their own private parking have a limit of 6 foot 6 and they mean it.

If I had to chose between the FJ and X-Terra, the X for me wins hands down based on my research when I was looking for such a beast.  Much more practical, better visibility, easier entry/exit and its off-road ability is probably within 2% of the FJ's.  And how many people truly push their rigs to the extreme where that extra 1 degree of departure angle really matters?  If you do, there are lots of add-ons for each to make them that much more capable.

I like the X-Terra, but my local Nissan dealers are so horrible, no way I'd be able to buy one.  I love the look and package of the FJ, but the poor fuel economy is giant turn off.  Though the X-Terra doesn't look much better in that regard.

Ya, that and the Warren winch.  :)

And I take what I said back about some hotels limiting garage height to 6.6.  I was dreaming.  I'm in the Novotel North York tonight and low and behold they have a yellow restrictor crash bar at 6.1 at the entrance.  A municipal lot at Yonge and Eglinton was 6.2   The only 2 covered car parks Ive been in today.

Consequently you don`t see any FJs down here.  But there again you don't see many newish X-Terras anywhere.  Not a big mover.

I like the Xterra Pro-4X more than the FJ. Have you considered the Pathfinder and / or 4Runner? Ask Nissan about the radiator leaks into the tranny issue and the timing chain noise due to the timing chain wearing out the tensioner and rails prematurely. I believe they have since (2010) rectified these 2 issues but it is always good to double check. I don't think you could go wrong with the Xterra though. Besides a pickup and or the Jeep YJ it (Xterra) is probably the most trail ready!
