passanger rear wheel will not move?
« on: July 31, 2010, 07:42:11 pm »
My 2000 323 CI with sport package, auto, about 70,000 miles on was parked for a week
When to move and the car would not move, felt like you where driving up onto 2x4, turn off the car. put in N and tried to push the car , it would not move
Lift the back end up, car in N, driver side rear wheel I could spin, put barking brake on could not spin the wheel
Passenger side rear wheel with the car in N, the wheel would only move about an inch or two back and fore, parking brake on wheel would not move
Any ideas what the problem is?

Parking brake is stuck on probably, makes sense the other side could only move a bit.  What happens if you goose it?  My S2000 had the brakes stuck once I had to give it a lot of power and it finally broke free.

Hopefully it's something as simple as a seized wheel bearing or a stuck parking brake.

When I tried the braking, the wheel did no move so I do not think it is that
Giving it a lot of power I think it may cause more problems

It sounds like the parking brake is stuck on.  The cable probably connects to a lever on the caliper, give the lever an appropriate whap in the right direction with a suitable hammer-like device.

When a wheel bearing starts to fail, usually you'll hear a grinding or screeching noise, especially under load.  AFAIK, no real way to tell for sure without taking everything apart.

A really don't think a wheel bearing would cause the wheel to lock that hard.  The other moves a little because there is play in the diff, that is normal, seems to me the brake is stuck on.

But ab says the wheel moves a couple of inches when the parking brake is off, but is totally stuck when the parking brake is on. That sounds to me like the parking brake is in fact engaging and releasing.

Have you checked for a rock or something stuck between the wheel and the brake caliper? It could be sitting there loosely, then wedging itself tight once the wheel turns a bit. I've had that happen on a couple of vehicles.

Oh I read that he tried the driver's side and it worked but the passenger side did not work.  Mechanically it makes no sense unless something is stuck, like as you suggest a rock or something.

The drive side is free,
Passenger side there is an inch or 2 of play, when parking brake is  on no play, release brake there the inch of  play
Heading into Toronto today, will stop by Princess Auto to pick up some stands for the car before I crawl under it

Have the rear brakes been serviced on this car?  I've seen this before, otherwise I would say a rusted  lever mechanism of some sort, if the design is such.

Oh, not the parking brake then. As someone mentioned, perhaps something caught between the wheel and the caliper? ???

A really don't think a wheel bearing would cause the wheel to lock that hard.

It wouldn't. Its the parking brake.

When going away or placing my car in storage for the winter, I always place my car in gear and chock the wheels. With an Auto, I would chock the wheels, let the car come to a rest against them and then place the transmission in Park.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

Does your parking brake cable look all rusty on the passenger side?

I would say parking brake as well. Most rear disc cars have an  inner brake drum and parking brake shoes. Perhaps one of the retention springs for the shoes is snapped. The brake shoe lining could have delaminated as well. Common problem and design is prone to rusting.

Hopefully that is it because it could be a broken axle/differential? I doubt this though.

So, what was the problem? Parking brake?

Or maybe you're too embarrassed to admit that you had it towed to a mechanic for a rock stuck in the wheel?  :stick:   :)
