Corvette C6 in St. Augustine
« on: July 27, 2010, 04:22:40 pm »
As many of you know I am a huge Corvette fan. This past weekend my wife and I were in Saint Augustine and Palm Coast Florida for a Wedding. We had to rent a car and so I figured why not pony up for a Hertz ZHZ convertible Vette for 4 days - seemed like a great location to drive around in style.

I have previously driven the 505HP ZO6, but not for any real amount of time. This was my first time living with a Vette.

Because the issue will come up - yes, the interior is sub-par. Worse than my WRX.  But it doesn't matter. The car is very comfortable and you could literally drive it across the country no problem. The trunk (with the top up) could handle both of our suitcases (just barely).

Will probably write more about the driving when I have more time - but the car is a dream to drive. Makes all the right sounds (love the butterfly valves @ 3500RPM), and I've fallen in love with throttle over steer. The handling is very good, chassis is solid. Car has 436 HP, so obviously it went like stink and I pretty much drove the crap outta it. Unfortunately it was a slushbox, which really, is terrible.

More info on the car here: http://www.zhzfan.com/

Some pictures (sorry they're terrible but time was tight going to events):

PS, Saint Augustine is gorgeous  ;)

Nice Rental!!!

I have been told by numerous friends and colleagues that St. Augustine is their favourite part of Florida.

Oh yea..those are the Dominican Montecristos.  Pretty tasty!!  You are allowed to bring back 50 each, so I hope you did!!!

And yea...TONS of places down there.  I was just at this new place in Detroit this past weekend, and it was GREAT!!  Live music, a cigar roller on site...it was awesome.  Am thinking of getting a membership for the VIP section in the club...  http://www.lacasadelahabana.com/

Monte's are generally my go-to.....and I was wondering what they were with the whole Cuba thing. I don't smoke enough to know what else to get so I gave em a try.

2 different companies.  Habanos S.A. is the official Cuban state tobacco "company"  Whereas the ones you bought are a French/Spanish company called Altadis.

You could have called me...I would have told you which killer smokes to get.... ;D

I have rented the ZHZ in Vegas several times. Loads of fun and surprisingly tame at normal hwy speeds.

I priced the HZH for the last week in December: in Phoenix, it's $988US for the week with only 700 free miles.  I can do that in one day!  However, I noticed if I start to reserve a car from Hertz's "Fun" section, the Corvette is offered as an upgrade.  When I select the upgrade, I notice the website says "unlimited mileage".  I wonder if Hertz would honour that?

States might be different. Based on the fact that it's A) summer in Florida and B) their economy is in the dumpster I got a really good deal.

The Vette was offered to us as an upgrade (on our original mid-size rental) with unlimited miles. It was just another $50 a day on what was already a reasonable price for the mid-size. I couldn't say no. Plus the kicker is that I used my TD travel points to pay for it  ;)

Yeah, I was surprised just how good a daily driver it was. Literally tamer around town than my wife's Corolla. You just need to get used to how wide it is. I can't stress enough how comfortable it was.

There's an idea: I'll rent a Mustang and see if they offer the Corvette as an upgrade.  :)

I was originally going to see if I could upgrade to a vert Stang - but this came up before I had the chance. I was surprised how many nice cars you can rent through Hertz.....Mustangs, Camaros, Benzes, etc.

It also didn't hurt that the guy at the desk in Orlando thought we were honeymooners (which we immediately played up).  ;D

Re unlimited mileage.
In June I had booked a Camaro as no Vettes were available. When I showed up to pick up the car they had a Vette available and upgraded me for free + unlimited mileage.
