I finally upgraded the Versa's stereo
« on: July 24, 2010, 02:10:33 pm »
Well, I finally did it. I've wanted to upgrade to a stereo system with Bluetooth and iPod control for quite a while, and I also wanted the system to look as stock as possible, including the illumination color. Nothing too flashy that attracts attention from the wrong people. Just out of curiosity, I went to the local Nissan dealer and they quoted me a price of $675  :o :o for their optional 6-disc head unit with an aux input but no Bluetooth or iPod control, PLUS installation! I didn't bother to ask what that would've set me back.

Long story short, I went to the FutureShop here in town and got a JVC KW-XR810 for $299.99 plus a free extended warranty and installation for a total cost of around $400 plus the dreaded HST. :banghead: Even with the stock speakers, the sound is so much better it's hard to believe - much cleaner bass and crisp, clear highs. The new deck integrates well with the dash and has lots of connectivity options for future upgrades. The JVC also has variable illumination colors which allowed me to exactly match it with the car's dash lighting. That's really an important feature to me and something I didn't expect at this price point, so kudos to JVC for that.

The Bluetooth feature works as advertised and the iPod control function is excellent if a bit basic. Now I just plug the my iPod into the USB port and hide it away in the cubby above the stereo. No obstructive window mount and no wires draped all over the dash, plus the iPod continually charges while it's plugged in. Very neat.

This is what it looks like. My only gripe with it is the big chrome control knob and the glossy black finish. Matte black would be better IMO and make the unit look a bit more OEM, but at this price I guess I can't have everything. Still, it's pretty nice I think.  :)

Very nice!  I know what you mean about the ability to hook up the iPod... I was really missing it in my Versa as well, and was going to change the radio to something like you got, but ended up getting the SE-R before I got the chance...

I don't know about the '10 Versa's, but the '10 Sentra has a great factory radio with full USB iPod intregration.
