This has a 3.3L V6.

1997 Dodge Intrepid - 160k km - e-test, safety - $1800

What to check in this car? going to check this tomorrow.

Private or dealer?   Best bet, obviously, would be something you can see the repair history of.
For certain, if it has the 2.7 the engine has been replaced at some point.  My brother has a 98 or 99 that had the engine go at around 63,000 km... cost him over $5k because he couldn't prove maintenance/oil changes etc were completed etc...so Chrysler basically told him to suck it.

He's had the car since new, and other than the engine issue, its been pretty reliable.

(Corolla Upgraded --> (Camry Sold | (Intrepid Taken Out))) --> 1999 Mazda 626 LX 2.5V6

There are quite a few decent cars with 5spd manual transmissions. Mrs and I both will be driving the car so manual trans is out of question for now.

We are thinking of getting an auto trans for now and spring for a manual later for the second car.

Echo $1900.

Manual driving lessons only costed me about $150.   Less if you have a willing friend.   :)

Test drove 3 cars today. Pulled the plug on ...........

1997 Chrysler Intrepid 3.3L V6, 162000km for $1850. Car Proof report, E-Test, Safety, new brake pads, oil change included. This car had only 2 owners, got traded in.

So, thank you everyone for all the helpful tips :P.

Now, the real help is needed, what to do with this car to keep it running properly?

Hmmm park it all winter and drive the Camry?  Seriously, are they one of the Chryslers with a transmission that needs to be serviced regularly with fresh fluid to keep it alive?   I sorta remember from many threads that the minivans with the same or similar powertrains had transmission problems..

Artic or Maritimestorm will know.

Sir tpl,

The Camry was fabulous, it was sold off to buy two cars for the family.

This is my winter beater, this must run in winter and if it survives, endure my daily grind on Gardiner Expressway.

Later, the Mrs. will get a better car whose name can be used with the word reliability in the general vicinity.

So, for the other guys who know these cars. Are the transmission issues need to be dealt with regular trans fluid changes?

From APA.ca:

CHRYSLER Concorde, Dodge Intrepid (1993-1997), Eagle Vision (1993-1997)

* Recall covering 1993-1997 models with 3.5L engine: the fuel injection delivery system may leak fuel from some of the defective seals. This could result in fire. Replace nitrile rubber “o-rings” with “o-rings” made of an improved material. Fuel rail will also be evaluated and replaced as required.

This one is a 3.3L V6 161hp engine - base model.

The 3.5L 214hp was only available in the ES trim.

Do you have the service records for the Intrepid and the owner's manual?   That's a good place to start to see what upcoming maintenance may be required.   Are the tires and battery good enough for a couple of Toronto winters?

Tires are BFGoodrich Momentum. Most likely I will get a set of winter tires and steel wheels.

Checklist
1- Battery Check (got a battery charger with cables)
2- Spark Plugs
3- Engine Oil change
4- Transmission Fluid check
5- Brake Fluid Check

I'm yet to meet automatic transaxle that couldn't benefit from regular fluid changes more so on certain Chrysler transaxles(Intrepid/Neon/Caravan). That having been said at the mileage on this one, have the fluid changed but do not use a chemical flush and use only ATF+4. At the mileage on this old girl, the chemicals may cause issues. Alot people kill slush boxes 2 ways; 1. never changing the fluid 2. Using the wrong fluid.

Flush or just change - that is quite a conundrum for me because I have owned a car this old before.

Based on what you are saying. Avoid flushing the fluids, just change them.

I am planning to change the oil and transmission fluid immediately.

Next up, Brake Fluid, Power steering fluid, Engine Coolant, all these before winter.

What about differential oil?
