Questions on a 2010 F-150 purchase
« on: July 05, 2010, 05:00:46 pm »
Hello to all, I signed a purchase contract for a F-150 at a Ford dealer late June when they were offering $7000 Ford incentive plus $1000 Costco rebate, the sales guy gave me additional $3400 dealer rebate, which both of us were satisfied.  He sent out an order which will arrive in about three weeks from now. I left a 1000$ deposit.

I noticed the Employee Pricing  and did a calculation on Ford Canada website, which shows  the employee pricing would be $5200 , plus another $5500 Ford rebate. I went to another dealer, the sales guy confirmed the numbers above and gave me an additional $2400 dealer rebate and even printed it out. He said this number needs to be confirmed with the manager but he thinks the manager would agree. Now this price is 2000$ cheaper than the contract I signed. I went to the original dealer, the sales guy says with employee pricing it's impossible to get additional dealer rebate, so the second sales guy must be lying about this $2400 amount.

I called a friend working at Honda, he says that it's possible to get additional rebate, but since I signed a cash purchase contract, I cannot just walk away even if I choose to leave the 1000$ deposit to the dealer. They have the right to force me pay the truck once it arrives.

My question is first of all, is it true that I can not walk away from my purchase contract ?  Second of all, with employee pricing, is it still negotiable with the dealer ?

Any thoughts on this matter is appreciated !

You'd have to consult a lawyer to be sure, but my guess is that, since you signed a contract, they can force you to buy the truck. Normally I think they'd "let" you walk away and simply keep your deposit, but I doubt any dealer wants a special order truck sitting on their lot at the moment, so you might be SOL.

Is it worth the headache of fighting them to save $1000 (since they'd definitely keep your deposit)?

At this stage, you'd be relying on the goodwill of the dealer, I believe. There may be a "cooling off" provision in your province, but after the amount of time that has elapsed, I wouldn't count on it.

Once you decide on a vehicle and sign on the dotted line, stop shopping! No good can come of it. It's the same deal you had been happy with, just accept it and move on. With all of the various incentive programs in rotation it's almost impossible to time it so you get the best absolute deal.

Neither answer so far is coming from Quebec and I suspect that Quebec consumer protection is different from anywhere else in Canada.   So abcba I think you need a Quebec answer preferably from someone like the Lemon Aid people ( if that still is Montreal based.

Thanks guys for the advice, I appreciate all of them. As a matter of fact, I carefully read the contract in full myself and it stated that basically I need to pay 500$ for every 10000$ vehicle value if I don't want to buy the car I signed for. For a 40K truck it would be 2000$, which would not be worth the hassle. Plus someone was right about stop shopping once you signed the contract, too. You can never get the best deal, right ?

I heard once a while ago, once you find a wife, you better stop looking or else you're in for some trouble  :rofl2:. I think this can apply to shopping, as well.
