2009 Sonata?
« on: May 30, 2010, 09:25:13 am »
Alright, my Kia dealership nearby has this 2009 Sonata with 33k on it for $14,900. It's a base GL model, 4-cyl auto. It was driven by an old couple who just traded it in for a Sorento because they wanted to haul a camper or something. Even though it's base, the 2009 Sonata still comes with heated seats, trip computer, telescopic steering wheel, 6 airbags. It's only really missing ESC and TC that I would normally want. Alloys would have been nice, but doesn't bother me too much. Plenty of space for our new baby and her huge seat, huge stroller and everything else. With its big trunk, the Sonata gives us a lot more cargo space than our Sportage does (except than for big boxes/items, that is). Drove it for a little while and feels as though it'll do a great job with its 175hp and 5 speeds, probably will feel quite a bit quicker than the Sportage.

They're offering me $500 for my Accent, and are prepared to lower the asking price of the Sonata a little bit more depending on how things check out at the inspection; if nothing major needs to be changed (brakes, etc), they'll be more flexible. Tires are in very good condition.

If I can get it close to $15k on the road, good buy?

I just priced it for Toronto and the trade in value comes to 9-11k. So plus taxes, plus a thousand or so the dealer will want to make - there is still room for bargaining. I'd assume you should have more negotiating power without the Accent trade.

I'd forget trading the Accent in.  They're giving you nothing for it.  Literally!  I bet you could get $1500 for it.

I'd offer them $12K, cash deal.
No place I'd rather be...

Well selling the Accent would be a huge hassle... it wouldn't pass a safety as the handbrake doesn't work and it's got a huge crack in the windshield... so finding the buyer who's willing to take it as is might be a problem. But yeah, I see your point, I suppose I could probably get $1000 for it.

If trading in the Accent is such a problem for them, maybe I'll just outright buy the Sonata and figure out what to do with the Accent after... I never thought it'd be that big of a deal for them!

As for $12K, even if it is without taxes, I'd surprised that they would take it. Certainly can't hurt to start that low though.

Thanks for the tips!

Wow, that's a great price on a good car.

I rented a Sonata for a week in California last year and while not being terribly exciting it was thoroughly competent.  Comfortable, quiet, smooth and frugal.  The engine had more than enough power and it cruised along at 85 mph nicely.
