How sad this is that the person got off but for some reason I'm not shocked at all, upset but not shocked. If I ran into somebody with my bike and killed them, I wonder if I would be given the same forgiveness.

As to bikes on hwys. They need to start paving shoulders to allow more room and greater safety. How can we still build highways with gravel shoulders that are sloped down into a ditch? Maybe this was for those people that like to throw garbage from their cars so it will roll right down into these ditches.

Not unheard of for someone falling asleep not be charged...

Sad but true. Last winter we were following a car that was going left and right, all over the road, both lanes. We called the police thinking he was drunk. Police came, stopped the guy, took our names and phone numbers, etc. 1 hour later they called back to say that we wont have to testify or anything, the guy was not drunk, he was falling asleep. They were not planning to lay any charges. This is not right.

There was a local guy here who was drunk, crashed the car and killed his young son who was a passenger.  He wasn't charged as he had "suffered enough" and it "wouldn't serve the community" by putting him in jail.

Point number 1 -- agreed.  Though, I know it's a pat thing to say, but putting him in jail isn't going to bring those 3 dead people back.  It's just sad for all those involved.
Point number 2 -- I hate those sloped gravel shoulders.  My first reaction is, why don't they put guardrails where there's a deep ditch?

In Guelph we recently had some road work done involving Segregated bike lanes (also called a cycling track).  The pictures shows how cyclists will be given right of way by coming up the right side and cutting across.

This will cause nothing problems. And the car isn't going to be on the receiving end.

Fortunately they ore only doing this in a few places near the Uni where the roads are divided and have 4 lanes.

A terrible idea.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

How many winters will all those painted lines last?  ::)  If it's anything like here they repaint stop lines/crosswalks etc every 2-3 years. Unfortunately the paint they use lasts about 6 months.
