Powder coating
« on: April 30, 2010, 01:25:13 am »
Anyone know a good place to get a set of rims powder coated in Ottawa? How much does it cost?
I'm thinking about getting my rims powder coated in black or charcoal.

From what I hear if your going to change the color of a set a of rims powder coating is the way to go. Does anyone know how durable powder coating is? I've done a bit of research but I'm still not 100% sure about getting it done.

Cheers Z

Google showed 4 places in Ottawa that claim to do powder coating.  One link, suggested $250-350 for the set of rims.
Just for fun there are many videos on Youtube showing people doing it at home... not for anything as big as a wheel rim tho'   ( one vid shows someone spraying the powder with no goggles or breathing mask... a Darwin winner in training maybe?)

Come autocross with us and drop them off on the 16th, pick them up at the end of the month.

I'm no expert, but I had a friend who powder coated his rims (to a gunmetal) a number of years ago. They turned out very well.

I think if one is thinking of painting their rims, the smart choice is to powder coat as I believe it's much more durable.

Yes I have seen the home kits but they say that you can't use the oven for cooking food anymore.
So unless I can find a spear oven somewhere that isn't an option.

Tempting but that would mean I would need to drive back on my winters. My plan is to get them done in late fall and order some new rubber for next spring.

Powdercoating is more durable, but it can't be touched up (properly), so it's a give and take. You also can't really get a proper gloss finish with it, if that's your style.

Come autocross anyhow, you'll be that much closer to needing new tires.  BTW, my powder-coating friend has an STI, maybe he can loan you some wheels, you never know.

Very!

I powder coated my Supra wheels.  VERY hard and durable.  I deliberately tapped the face of my wheels with a wrench, and not a scratch.
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

You are looking at about $400 to have a set of wheel's sand blasted clean and then powder coated in a gunmetal and a powder clear coat.

You cannot get a proper gloss finish??

I would post picture's to show you the gloss you can get from posted but the site will not let me.
