Love the photos... very sharp, and the white very clean. Lovely seats!

In Canada you cannot get HIDs on non-GTIs. I'd like to see HID availability and a sport package with different wheels (although yours look nice, like something a little more aggressive in 17"), or even just the 3-dr Sportline in a 4-dr with HIDs. Quite pricey to buy aftermarket and would be happy to pay VW for 'em.

The Multimedia audio unit looks swanky, how do you find the functionality and sound?

I'd *REALLY* like a Golf 5-dr or Golf Wagon Comfortline MT TDI

Did you consider getting the TDI instead?

I considered and test drove all 3 variants of the Golf (the GTI, TDI and 2.5). Was impressed with all three. Having already driven a 2.0T turbo for 3 years and fulfilled my need for speed, the GTI was too close to my previous Passat in terms of adrenaline experience. I also checked out the TDI - that was a good drive but a couple of dealers I spoke to couldn't guarantee delivery of the Golf TDI until May and I needed a vehicle earlier than that. There was also a considerable price premium of several thousand dollars to get a TDI with similar levels of equipment trim to that of the 2.5 Highline.

Last but not least, Consumer Reports seems to like the 2.5 version of the Golf. I think VW have made great strides in the last 5 years to get things right and hence my rationale for getting my second VW in succession.

You're in luck - both those models you can get in Canada - so no excuses for not going on a test drive.  ;)

The multi-media unit I have is known as the RCD-510. It's probably not as swanky as the one found in the GTI which I think you can get with built in navigation and hard drive. That said, my unit is touchscreen with 6 CD function, Sirius Satellite radio, SD card function as well as iPod connectivity in the armrest. Overall it's very easy to use and the sound is good enough for me.

I would not buy the Navigation version, just yours which does what I need it to - and then some - with bonus of Dynaudio Lite speakers if possible.

Looks fantastic!  I was able to test drive a Highline Golf not that long ago and it was superb... really really nice ride (buttery smooth) but also fun and tossable without feeling like it would float away.  I was so impressed!  Congrats on the purchase!

Nice! Congrats. There seems to be a wave of new VW and BMW owners around here... ;) :D

It's almost like the VW, BMW, Mazda, and Subaru forum here!

Spheric, congrats, great car!!

Congrats, beautiful car.  Love the new golf.

My sister has the exact same white highline coming this week with an auto transmission. Can't wait to pick it apart when she gets it.

Spheric, how is the car - both good and bad? Are you missing the size, trunk, or 2.0T of the Passat? I rather like the I5 engine sound and characteristics, but haven't driven one long enough to determine if I'd be happy with the fuel economy.

For 2011MY VW Canada is offering a 5dr Sportline, but solely with the 2.5 I5.

PS, doing as you suggested a few posts ago. Something may come of it very soon...

It's been a pretty seamless (and enjoyable) process transitioning from the larger Passat to the Golf. Physics dictates that the handling will be better (almost go kart-ish relatively speaking) - and I say this with the car sitting on standard 16 inch OEM Hankook Optimo tires. Haven't missed the Passat's larger trunk one bit, and in fact I feel more confident lugging stuff home from Rona or Costco due to the hatchback configuration. Interior wise, it feels more snug but in a sporty sense - the seats hug you as you go around corners at speed.

On the downside, I'm still debating whether to get a short shifter installed. I'm finding the gear throws a bit on the long side, and moving from 1st to 2nd gear could have been made more buttery smooth in my opinion. But the plus side, is that the gear ratios are pretty wide and I could toddle around town in 3rd gear with no problem if I had to. There is sometimes an unexplained ticking noise coming from the driver's door column side (some of the VW forums attribute this to plastics expanding in the heat) - but I can live with it….but it's nothing on the scale of the creaks that would sometimes come from the Passat's dashboard in summer.

The car has a 55 litre tank and I done 630-650 km on a full tank on mostly highway driving. From all accounts the mileage isn't that great and you have to decide if you can live with economy that is worse than other vehicles in it's class - but on the flip side, the 170 hp 5 cylinder has enough power to meet most people's commuting needs. I checked the oil last weekend and I was surprised it was still a golden amber colour - the Passat oil would turn black within a week and I had to keep topping it up.

The 5 dr Sportline sounds like an interesting proposition. Just checked the VW.ca site and it wasn't on there yet. I test drove the 2 door version and the cloth seats were one of the best I've sat in.

Thanks for the update. That mileage is decent IMO.

I'm debating between a 2010/11MY Golf 5dr or Wagen TDI 6MT right now. Both have their selling points and I'm having a difficult time deciding (not that I could go wrong with either). Glad to hear you're enjoying yours.

They're both Golfs, silly  :P  And both TDIs.

Not to tread-jack, I've also put down the deposit yesterday (more anxious than ever about my decision, but am sure I'll love it)  :bounce:
