Ouch! Is it even worth claiming then? (compared to the premium possibily going up?).

I wondered about that too, but as it turns out you are not penalized for making a vandalism claim on the Comprehensive portion of your insurance.  *whew*

what if they make it back..  with experience in fire-arms and explosives?  :rofl2:

You keep sending them out...the more times the better...at least you are getting some use out of them.

Hell, make them walk a mine field.

Can you tell I'm not a bleeding heart type. They're adults. They knew what they were doing, so pay the price.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Chances are they were not adults. Judges just give the little sshhiitts a slap on the wrist and they know it.

So senseless and stupid. And a PITA for you as owner. I would definitely go the insurance route tho, as this type of claim is not marked against you.

I just received the cost estimate from the repair shop: $2,490!!!

Holy smokes!

Thank goodness we've got coverage against vandalism.  We're still out of pocket $500, but that's a damn sight better than $2500.

Pity the poor victim who isn't covered...

I know it won't help you if you park on the street but for my car in the driveway I have a motion sensor that goes "Bing-Bong" if the beam is tripped.  It works perfectly as the squirrels on the fence and the occasional night time raccoon test it for me.  It gives me great peace of mind when in bed.

And where would you be getting that information.  ???

In Ontario, everything is recorded for underwriting purposes; EVERYTHING.  Whether it reflects on your future rates depends on how many you have claimed.  Submit 3 vandalism claims in one year and you're entering cancellation territory.

The only comprehensive claim that insurance companies seem to be at peace with is animal hits WITH a POLICE REPORT.  On these occasions, the comprehensive deductible is waived.  You will note from this particular incident that Scarecrow is paying the first 500 BUCKS.  There is an underwriting reason for that.

Just to be clear, Scarecrow will not see a premium increase over this one occurrence.  Add a few more in X period of time and then BOOM.  That is why on the insurance application they ask where the vehicle normally stays:  garage, private drive, condo underground, rental building, street.

It was my insurance broker and insurance provider who both told me so, and neither mentioned anything like an annual/periodic limit on Comprehensive claims (although I wouldn't be surprised if there is one, as you say).

In any case as this was such a rare and random act of vandalism, and as this is the first time we've ever had to make such a claim in 25+ years of driving, I'm willing to accept those odds.

How about a security camera pointing to the driveway or street? I seen them at Best Buy just the other day, Plug in and record.

That price is even more outrageous then the initial incident. $2500 for f-ing what? A rear window and a head rest? Ridiculous! A new "original" rear window on my car costs $700 at speedy, a body shop installed an "after-market" one for $300. Ok, assuming you go with the "original" from Nissan and it's more expensive on that vehicle and ends up being $1500 - which is a stretch, then that's a mighty pricey head rest at $1000. Rear seat entertainment unit built into it? What's a 7 inch screen worth these days? It's still too much!

No wonder Ontario insurance rates are so f-ing high! This job can be done acceptably in under $1000 for sure and probably even under $500, IMHO.

CyberNick  - My father is an insurance adjuster, he told me that there are basically 2 rates when going for repairs. There is the private price (you as an individual getting your car fixed on your own) and the insurance company prices which is a lot more (usually 2-3 times or so I'm guessing).

I agree with you, if you were paying out of pocket, about $300-$400 for the glass and likely out the door, about $1000 or so.

The repair cost estimate breaks down as follows: $1,760 for parts and the balance in labour and taxes.  The work is being done by one of the insurance company's "preferred repair shops."

The aftermarket replacement window is $815 (would've been $325 more for OE glass), $530 for new seat fabric as the seat was torn by the stone, $240 for a new headrest, $135 for a new high-mounted brake light, and $40 for a window seal.  I imagine some of these parts are OE, as the X-Trail was not sold in the U.S. not everything is likely available on the aftermarket.

So, are these prices reasonable?  F*&#ked if I know...

Seems to me it could've been much worse, had the bodywork and paint needed repair too.

If they don't make it back...oh well. They're expendable!

what if they make it back..  with experience in fire-arms and explosives?  :rofl2:

Then it's time to run to the hills...  :rofl2:

That's pretty sad indeed, thx god nothing like this ever happened to me.

When I was a kid and was bored I used to gather my friends and ring some bells around the neighbourhood. Guess the thing has evolved now, for worse.

Wow that just awful. I thought it was just a smashed window. Seem to be so much damage :(
