It is time to transfer money into USD account for that trip to buy in USA. Even if you think you might not orchestrate purchase until the summer. I see Maryland is no State Tax as well as New Hampshire. If you have anybody who knows someone in these States it might be worth a few hundred to transfer ownership to you and drive car to border crossing with or without warranty.
What we need is a huge wave of similar thinking people. |

It is time to transfer money into USD account. And its going to get worse according to my neighbour who just came back from over 4 months of vacation in the US. He said things are far worse than we are lead to believe. There were 4 large sailboats in the bay, half under water...owners just walked away from the payments. Others working multiple jobs just to keep their homes. He figures the housing market has not hit rock bottom yet. |

He's bought large (40'+) motor cruisers out of Florida for less than half of what the asking prices were 2 years ago. I think we may see par or better for an extended period this time around. |

I presume your friend in the boat business is in operation in Canada. I think this practice has been going on whenever the dollar is at par or nearabouts. More depreciation down South. OK I guess as long as the use is in fresh water. I belive the same with Aircraft. Railton |

I've given up on there being any real change.
There simply are not enough people willing to actually go to the US and buy to make a real provable dent in dealer sales in Canada. You'd need lots of people doing it enough to make lots of very big powerful dealers complain to their HQ and even then they likley will respond with the same tpe of tactics of throwing up artificial barriers to cross border shopping.
Most people will simply suck it up and its just the way it is.

I think a lot of people are afraid of the process. Some like to lease - so they are out. Some have to arrange for loans and that might be difficult and a lot of people just don't want to invest the time it takes.
Lots of reasons why people can't or won't. It appeals to some, especially in they have the money in the bank and it's a matter of how much they want to take out. US wins - they save more. And finally not everyone wants the same car and is buying at the same time so it's difficult to try and prearrange these kind of things. |

Lots of people are buying cars in the United States. That's precisely why many warranties are no longer honored, some recall letters cost two grand, and why some dealerships are forced not to sell to Canadians.
Thousands and thousands of cars are being imported. I know from experience dude - if you know what I mean.
We as Canadians just love taking it up the ass with no lube. Hold on tight, grit the teeth, and take it. Same with this HST. We're just taking it. *Ho-Hum*
I'm going to get burned on my new house this fall by HST, at least I imported a car and saved some money..... |

Quick question. Do duties have to be paid if the vehicle is not North American made, but is USED? |

We as Canadians just love taking it up the ass with no lube. No butts about it. But I do have a bone to pick with you. I may be Canadian, but don't lump me in with the ones you were talking about. I know where to shop to stretch my buck. |

I believe so. I think it is 6%. There may be no duties if it is more than X years old though. The rules change from time to time. I think if it was over 15 years old, it was duty free. They may have reduced that to less years. Call to make sure. |
