Used Vehicle Review: Volkswagen Touareg, 2004-2010
« on: April 08, 2010, 04:08:07 am »

Though the VW Touareg is "a rare SUV that combines satisfying on-road performance and off-road ability," its poor record of reliability may prove expensive if there's no warranty left, says Contributing Editor, Chris Chase.

A scary, scary used car buy, especially a 2003-2005 model. I've heard horror stories of owners needing a complete suspension replacement costing in excess of $7500 - likely half the value you'd pay to buy the vehicle in the first place. Unless you have absolutely convinced yourself that nothing else will do, there are a lot of other capable 4x4's out there that have a much better reliability rating, like the 2003+ Toyota 4Runner or Nissan Pathfinder.

That being said, if I had the dough to pick up a 2009 V6 TDI, it is a capable, attractive, solid vehicle. Kind of like a Range Rover, but cheaper!

What is with VW?.......Attractive vehicles, great drivers, great interiors BUT just terrible mechanical and electrical woes with no end in sight.
Just too bad because I like their cars.....the Passat CC is 1 sweet ride.    ;)

I love VW products. Sometimes I come close to buying one by saying what the hell you only live once. But I can never pull the trigger out of fears of repair woes. How can I spend my days reading about car reliability and then make a purchase that goes against everything I have read.

I drive my cars for a long time and hate dealing with dealers (even when just begging for warranty). Not a good combination with a VW.

Same reasons apply to me not buying an Audi or BMW. I want one...just chicken sh%t I guess and maybe a little to cheap.

A guy down the street had a Touareg that he was trying to get rid of. That thing sat in his driveway for more than a year before he finally unloaded it.

A couple of weeks ago I was at a Hyundai dealership checking out the new Sonata when I saw a used Touareg sitting on the lot. It was an '05, and the asking price was $17,999! The poor sap that traded it in probably got $10K for it if he was lucky. Now THAT'S what I call depreciation! :o

 :iagree:

We thought about a CC for my wife before deciding to go in a completely different direction. The whole "VW reliability" question was enough to make us move on.

Good move. A coworker has one and has had over $6K in repairs over the last year.

And here I thought the CC was a pretty good vehicle when I sat in one last week. Didn't know even something debuted in 08 from VW is that bad.

I am glad I talked my next door neighbour out of getting a 2005 Touareg. Instead I talked him into a '05 Acura MDX. Has had no problems at all. It was a little more expensive and 10000 more KM's, but came with a piece of mind.

what happens when the MDX transmission craps out? You will have to move. ;D
