add on all the gas money, duty, tax, or whatever
you end up saving at least 30%

just my opinion

tires are one of the many things that is ALOT cheaper down the states

walmart usa - exact same cup noodle -$0.29
walmart canada - exact same cup noodle $1.29

you get the idea...

This post is so RFD it is ridiculous

Saving a $1 on a cup of noodles (really?)
Exaggerations about pricing, 30% cheaper when you include time/gas/exhange? Not likely

Hate to break it to you, but far more than 30% cheaper. 43% the last time I did the numbers for my last order.

What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

I don't know about a consensus but I've shopped for tires (both winter and all season) four times in the last 3 years for various vehicles. I've ended up ordering from the US everytime.

I posted in another thread (re: 05 Forester), but the difference between a local dealer and TR shipped to the US is about $108 for 4 tires. That's a lot, but the local dealer already has the wheels (with old tires) so there's a double convenience factor, both of buying locally and of not having to take them there.

It's tempting though.

ENVigor is made in the US, which makes the difference a little more because you're not paying duty on the incoming tires. I think you said they were $87 each, which means you're saving $6.09 per tire. Not a huge number, but the difference would only be $83 if they weren't made in North America.

I see kind of like why shoes are so cheap to order online, ship to US, and bring home tax-free. Not only saving the tax but also the duties on non-US imports.

OTOH if there were duty, the local price would be 6% higher, right? ;)

The CBS is pretty effective at collecting the HST at the border from my experience. Although,if you're out for the full 48 hours the $400 exemption makes a difference.

Sorry, I don't see any difference between an 8% PST and an extra 8% HST on tires. Either way, the total hit is 13%. And since CBSA already collects the 8% PST at the border, it's not like they're going from 5% to 13% at the border on a same-day run to pick up the tires.

Actually the one way it makes a difference is that if the tires are a business expense, the buyer will get the full 13% HST back instead of just 5% GST, but that will happen whether the tax is collected by an Ontario retailer or on direct import. I suppose the BC retailers will be collecting 13% HST instead of 5% GST on sales to Ontario? That's the other possible difference, I admit.

I'm trying hard not to buy (a) a new computer, and (b) a new office chair, until July 2. Though the cheapest source I've found for the latter so far is in Montreal, in which case it won't matter.

That's what he is referring to.

Although if as many people are driving back across the border with the tires installed and not claiming them as it seems, it may not make much difference anyway.
