jamie1 - Just curious, you didn't notice these things during your test drive? How long did you test drive it for? I usually do one for about 30-45 minutes and cover the streets and highway to see how the car is and how comfortable I feel.
I was not buying it. Chrysler's tech training school is in  Red Deer AB.  I was using to go back and forth from Edmonton for 2 days. We take a used vehicle off the lot instead of taking our own car.
Enjoying the Alberta advantage

He works at a Chrysler dealership, the ranger was a used car lot and they let him use it for 2 days

every vehicle fits people differently,  I hate how the centre console is getting so large it cut into the driver space now

I don't understand why people expect more from the Ranger than it promises to deliver.

You get a very reasonable truck at a very reasonable price.  It does what is asked of it.

It will haul what you need to haul,
tow what you need to tow,
take you places where cars can't get (if you have a 4x4, and within reason)

And it will do all this with better than average reliability.  Since the Ranger has remained basically unchanged since (1993?) all of the kinks have been worked out of it.

And you get this at a very good price, indeed.  Try finding another brand new truck at the same price point as the Ranger.  NOT going to happen.

If you want a comfortable small truck, go out and buy a Tacoma.  But you'll pay almost twice as much for the Tacoma as you will for the Ranger.

Don't forget people, the Ranger is a TRUCK!!!!!!  When did we become so obsessed with the need for comfort and luxury?

You know, I have a 2006 Ranger Sport 4x4.  It has manual transmission, manual windows, manual door locks, manual seats, manual mirrors, manual everything.  The only 'luxury' it has is cruise control.  And I haven't noticed excessive wind noise at highway speeds, btw.  I can hold a normal conversation just fine.  What more do you want?  If you want whisper quiet, get a Lexus!!!

Okay, so the ride isn't so good.  The tail likes to waggle a lot on washboard roads/bumps.  It handles like a pig.  It sucks fuel.  I don't care.  I was well aware what I was getting into when I purchased it, and the reason I purchased it was because it was CHEAP.

The Ranger doesn't promise to be the most comfortable, fastest, or best truck on the market.  It does, however, promise to work hard, and at the lowest cost possible.

Great Big Abyss summed it up nicely. The last real update on the Ranger was in 1998 when changed the front suspension, 85% of the part numbers currently used on the Ranger were used on the 1983. Ford advertises the Ranger for what it is, a rugged, rough around the edges TRUCK. Body on frame, low tech drivetrain & suspension that's designed to be reliable & durable at the cost of efficiency and ride, sold at a low initial cost. That's it, nothing high tech about them, it also why I bought mine, the fuel mileage(20-27 IMPG) is about one should expect from a truck, but it will haul my 23' sailboat boat, I don't have to spend a fortune on tires or parts on it and I can expect with proper upkeep to get at least 10 years out of it.

My boss has got a 95 2.3/5spd/3.08:1 gears with 340K on the clock right now. So I figure mine if looked after should go around that far anyway.
