http://www.worldcarfans.com/110032925385/next-gen-2012-hyundai-elantra-spied-uncovered-strongly

A Korean car forum member has captured undisguised images of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra.

Featuring a "fluidic sculpture" design, the Elantra is virtually identical to the 2011 Sonata. Both cars have four-door coupe styling, sweptback headlights, a swoopy grille, and rearview mirrors with integrated LED turn signals. The only major difference is a shortened wheelbase.

Inside, the Elantra features a classy dashboard with metal accents and black trim. Other highlights include a leather-trimmed steering wheel, two huge instrument pods, and angular door pulls.

While details are limited, engine options will likely include a 1.6-liter four-cylinder and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 198 hp (148 kW / 201 PS) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm)

Like the exterior design, like the 200ish (!) HP 2.4.  Sure wasn't expecting that!
Not so sure about the dash design... swoops and angles all over - its a bit much.
And, must everyone have the instrument gauges in a pod??

AutoBlog seemed confused on if this was the new Accent or the new Elantra actually.  In the picture it looks big enough to be the new Elantra but I'm not sure.

Surprised about the 2.4L with the 200hpish... that is the Sonata's engine.

Wow by the fact an Elantra can almost have 200 HP. That number might scare away current Corolla owners wanna switch over.

Dislike the shape of the interior dash & console. But then, I am not smart enough to own a Hyundai, maybe watching all them commercials might help education and improve me.

Toyota puts the Camry engine in the Corolla XRS, and Mazda puts the Mazda6's 2.5L in the Mazda3s...what's so surprising?  The Elantra is going to have a 1.6L (I'm betting it'll have around 140 horsepower) for the mass-market and a 200-hp upgrade for those who want more.  Seems like a good idea to me, but hardly ground-breaking.

No, but I hadn't heard a thing saying that Hyundai was going to make the 2.4 an option.  Pleasant surprise!
Will be good to see how this matches up when the Civic gets its reboot

I'm betting on the 2.0 liter as the base engine for NA with the possibility of the 2.4 in an SE trim.  The 1.6l is probably bound for Europe and other countries.  It would make no sense in the Elantra while the Forte already has the 2.0l as its base engine.

Anyhow, Hyundai is definitely on a roll.

In a recent Motor Trend (?) test, the new Sonata made great objective numbers and was generally well-liked, but couldn't compete with the subjective driving experience (steering feel, etc) of the Fusion and the Accord.  I'm betting the same thing will happen with the Elantra versus the Civic and MkIII Focus.  Better numbers, not quite as good "feel."

The Focus is not as good to drive at the last one IMO. But pretty dam close. The Civic was great. But having driven the focus for 2 months. Civic 3 years. There is not much in it. The engine seem more lively in the Focus. The only think that lets the Focus down. Is that feels cheap compared to the Civic. Both suffer with chronic dust issues.

I think you're thinking of the wrong "new" Focus.  If you've driven it for two months, you're talking about this one, which everyone agrees is adequate but unimpressive:

I'm talking about the 2011 Focus, totally unrelated to the one you drove, which is coming next year, and may just be the greatest thing since sliced bread:

Yes I have that one the MK2. I was thinking about MK1 IMO drivers better.

That does seem to be the general consensus.  The MkIII (which is similar to the European MkII, which is unrelated to the North American MkII) should be the best-handling Focus we've ever had in North America, and by far the most refined.

Rumour has it the 2012 Elantra will also be available in a hybrid version (current incarnation of the elantra is already available as a hybrid in Korea and doing quite well)

I know. That's my car :) But that is an older 2.4L (2AZ-FE) that makes 158hp and 162ft/lb of torque.  The Elantra with a 200hp engine is just such a departure from Hyundai's previous efforts.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised :)

One thing is for sure is that the 2.4L in the Elantra will get far better performance and probably far better fuel economy than anything my XRS can hope to accomplish.

Between the Fiesta and the Accent and what actually looks like a cool Aveo (hard to believe, I know), not to mention the Fit, the B-segment is going to heat up quick in North America...

That gawd-awful green in the picture sure doesn't do it any favours.  Still think it looks good though.
Wonder what the cost would be to replace one of those super-size headlamp assemblies...

Agree that shopping in the B segment would make for a very tough decision
