Have a Mustang GT convertible booked for Florida in two weeks. On this Moncton trip I went with the usual, a Sonata with winter tires. It has the best base car sound system out there....you just plug in the iPhone and enjoy the ride. I even passed on a VW Jetta  :)

Do you mind saying what the cost is for the Mustang rental?  It's about $750/wk taxes in for a GT coupe in Phoenix.

It used to be the case where the standard Jetta had a superb stereo. Even now the Golf comes standard with an 8-speaker system in place of many other manufacturers' 4 and 6 speaker systems. In addition to quantity of speakers they offer quality too - full bass and clear highs. This isn't so much on the new, more affordable Jetta, but the base stereo on the Golf still sounds better than anything in its price range except for maybe a Scion Tc.

We were quoted $350 for a week in a V6 convertible in Hawaii, but went with a Jeep for the same price, that was with Enterprise. $750 sounds high, but that is the GT model.

I was quite pleased to pick up a 4 dr Focus SEL from Avis in Detroit today. I had been waiting to try one. I must say I am impressed. I don't care much for the beige interior color but other than that its one of the most comfortable solid small cars I have driven. So many throughful neat touches in the interior, Maybe a little busy for some but I like buttons  ;D. I can see this being a very nice drive for a small car for long trips. Very smooth and quiet but not soft or floaty at all. Not a big fan of the autobox. No comparion to my GTI's DSG. I am seriously considering trying to test drive a 5 speed when I get home to see if this cures my concerns. he engine is smooth but seems to be a bit soft in the power dept with the auto. The 5 speed might be better but I am a bit concerned that it will result in top gear RPMS jumping to near 3 K at 70 MPG from 2500 in the auto box.

Overall I have to say I haven't been this motivated by a rental in a long time. Its not often that I want to run out and consider buying a car due to a rental "test drive" but I have to say this is one of them. Color me impressed.

Why?   Cheap and reliable with probably good resale value... seems like a good candidate for rental.  Aren't they made in the USA now?
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

I asked what they had available for upgrades (I had booked a "Standard" class car) and this was one of the choices.  I'll be having backseat passengers occasionally, so it seemed like a good choice.  I've already discovered it has more than adequate power for freeway merging.  ;)

I'll be attending today's Nascar race in Phoenix, so I'll be resting in the grandstands.  Look for me on television.  :)

Driving a base Pathfinder for a week in Banff. At first I was put off by the lack of equipment, no automatic climate control, basic am-fm radio, etc. But I find the engine, tranny, steering to be spot on. OK, the suspension is somewhat harsh, but the driving experience is quite good!

Is it the old model or the new ones? Where did you rent it from?

Also Vdk, same question for you: where did you rent it from? Just curious!

Yuk... a Kia Soul for a 3 day business trip. All they had available in mid / full / std size... I know Kia have got a lot of plaudits for recent models, and the Optima and Elantra look pretty good from the outside (never driven them), but this Soul is awful!

In no particular order ....
Seats that feel like crap, no support, can not be adjusted to a comfortable spot.
Steering that feels like the cliche rubber band connects to the wheels.
An engine that seems designed to be the most efficient way to turn chemical energy into noise, forgetting about generating any power in the process but while using ~ 10l/100km on the highway.
Sadly the noise is horrible, >3k rpm at 120 kph gives a ear-hurting drone that's only partly drowned out by the wind and road noise.
Coupled to a 4 speed auto that has crap acceleration after 60kph
Brakes with zero feel and not much more stopping ability.
USB /iPOD interface that's either broken or won't work with an iPhone
Creaks / rattles / worn interior at < 30k km's
Stupid flashing lights around the speakers ... why did anyone ever think that might be a good idea?

To be fair and balanced, the Bluetooth pairing was pretty easy to figure out and the back seat looks quite roomy. Why would anyone buy one, so many better choices for the money... because they look "cool" ??? i.e. fugly.

Have to get a note added to rental file to never give me one of these again!
