The two leading vehicle window tints in North America are 3M and LLumar.

3M costs more than LLumar.  Many shops provide both.

The number one brand of Ceramic is apparently Huper Optik (German), followed by FormulaOne’s Pinnacle,  LLumar’s Axcess, Johnson Insulatir and Solar Gard Ultra Performance.

Interesting to note that "20%" tint doesn't exactly corresond to the amount of light filtered. Each manufacturer will differ.

Automotive Film3M™ Color Stable

While most other window film companies buy their polyester from someone else, 3M makes its own polyester in Decatur, Alabama. During this process, 3M patented a technology for producing its own nano-carbon polyester. This revolutionary and unique process, allows for maximum heat rejection without metals, which can interfere with radio and/or satellite signals. It also gives our films a beautiful neutral black look with unpararell color stability. Never before has anyone done this. In fact, it's so advanced that in time-based tests, 3M Color-Stable Auto Film held its color while most conventional dyed films rapidly changed to a purple color. No purple windows. Guaranteed!

We stand behind our work. Color-Stable films are backed by a limited lifetime warranty, which includes color stability.

Color Stable CS 5

Our darkest Color-Stable film designed primarily for the automotive market where a very low visible light transmission film is desired and allowed by state law. CS-5 allows 8% of visible light through the glass. It rejects heat, reduces glare and retards interior fading. It is used extensively on the passenger compartments of limos, vans, buses and other forms of mass transportation.

  Color Stable CS 20

Dark Color-Stable film is designed primarily for the automotive market where a lower visible light transmission film is desirable and allowed by state law. CS-20 allows 16% of visible light through the glass. It rejects heat, reduces glare and retards interior fading.

  Color Stable CS 35

Medium Color-Stable film is the standard in the automotive market. In many states, legislation regulating vehicle tinting has been written around this product. Therefore, becoming one of the most popular films in the line, CS-35 allows 38% of visible light through the glass. It rejects heat, reduces glare and retards interior fading.

  Color Stable CS 50

Light Color-Stable film is designed primarily for the automotive market where a high visible light transmission film is desirable and allowed by state law. CS-50 allows 51% of visible light through the glass. It rejects heat, reduces glare and retards interior fading.

Try finding a tinter outside a major centre that knows anything about ceramic tint
It is like talking to a deer caught in the headlights
It is harder to find a 3M guy outside of a big crntre now then a couple of years ago

I've never used these guys myself but for tinting in Ottawa they are highly recommended.

I'm curious about that, I understand the issue with radio waves but calling around I'm seeing lots of places that only do ATR (if Llumar) or other hybrid and they say it's not an issue. Perhaps it's one of those "in theory" vs. "in practice" things? That is, the film does impact your cell phone or other device, but in practice it doesn't have a significant impact on the call quality, especially in an area with strong signals? Has anyone here installed ATR or similar and then had trouble with signals? Will ATR in my fixed rear-side window (where the antenna is) affect AM or FM reception?

I'm even encountering some places that are saying they've been in the business X years and haven't had trouble with metallized, the ceramic films are new and they're sticking with the tried and true. They might be right, or the might be like the plumber I had in 1985 who didn't believe in new-fangled plastic pipes (to be fair, I think back then it was mostly a DIY tool).

GF finally agreed to have the Outback wagon tinted, 35% front, 30% rears.
Guy at work who has done it professionally forever and now does it on the side from his home garage.  He used Llumar and said he never has problems with it, $200, we'll see how she likes it when I pick her up from work in an hour.
