Mine is black as well now. Although the original color is kinda grey.

You could try to re-carpet or install hard wood.

Ah, winter! You only find out when you switch the heater to the floor position that somebody brought a bunch of dog crap in on their boots and left it smeared on the carpeting.

And upholstery in the cargo space is so useful. Potting soil, Christmas tree needles, remnants of the yard waste you dragged to the brush dump, it's all there!  And the loonie powered vac at the car wash either can't pick up a dried leaf, or it takes the dirt, your glasses, all your loose change, and the tire wrench in its enthusiasm.

I'd much rather see a sound deadening layer coated in something non-porous and non absorbent.

I think the Honda Element comes with plain flooring, at least in the back. Probably makes for easier cleanup from the violent reaction to the hideous styling.  ;D

Why the hell do they put carpeting in cars?

I've tried wire brush on patches of re-crystallized salt.  Still a lot of it left between the fibres.  I'm renting a steam cleaner this spring.

And who actually uses the OEM fitted floor carpets??? The same folks who put shag rugs in front of the toilet even though there are guys that use the same washroom?

...hope the winter-soaked carpeting will dry.

Why are they winter-soaked?

My car is a daily driver operated in an area with more snow and salt that most and the carpets are bone dry. They've also been through 10 winters and have never needed shampooing...just a light vacuuming.

Of course, I don't use any special mats because none of them work very well.

You're right about everything else though. Practical is not what consumers are after.

What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.
