Airbag vest
« on: February 20, 2010, 05:01:38 pm »
Just got an airbag vest for work, I ride quads and dirtbikes into remote areas so (especially after my roadbike accident this fall) I thought this might be something worth trying out.

Here I am trying out an inflation test:

Now if they're only make one for my lower leg.  ;D
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Aren't bodies normally fine, it's your limbs you have to worry about...

Oh sure, now you tell me.  ;)

Honda has an airbag in their Gold Wing. This is starting to get silly. I wonder what vehicles will look like and do in a hundred years.

You know you're old when you don't want ABS in any of your vehicles, especially your motorcycles.

I've broken my ribs several times in motorcycle crashes, so the ol' torso can take a beating.
No place I'd rather be...

Not sure where you got that idea? Chest, neck, and shoulder injuries are common. Racers often wear very large 'turtleback' type back protectors.

I had a lot of body damage last fall with the accident I had, collarbone, shoulder blade, and ribs broken, plus eye issues from head impact. And that was with excellent conventional protective armor from a very well respected company. Limbs, OTOH, were perfectly fine.

rrocket, in a previous thread:

For me though...the body armor underneath the textile or leathers is as important, if not more-so than materials.  Textile/leather provides abrasion resistance.  The body armor prevents the blunt trauma that cause fatal injuries.  A high quality back protector is IMO the most important piece of gear you can wear.  Even a minor get-off can without good armor could be crippling or fatal.  I recommend T-Pro armor (also known as Forcefield in the USA) or KNOX armor.

When I was laying in the hospital bed in Montana after the accident, I literally could not move from the chest crushing I had received. I love motorcycling, but I can do without fatal or near fatal injuries.

Well despite my not-at-fault accident in Austria last summer, I am going back to catch up on what I had missed out on. It was pretty depressing looking out of the window of my hospital room towards Salzburg and the mountains in the distance.

A new motorcycle is being shipped over and the adventure continues. Touring Europe wouldn't be the same in a car, no matter how exciting a make and model would be given to you. You can't pass in the mountains in heavier traffic while in a car, and that would be terribly frustrating.

If you fall off a horse, you get back on it.

What happened?

I had just filled up at the OMV gas station in Braunau am Inn and was heading towards Salzburg along the river Inn.

1.2 kilometers further, the car in front of me stopped, I stopped, but dingledorf in the car behind me on his cell phone, didn't and ploughed right into me ramming me into the car ahead. Speed was not a factor as I was in town and doing 35 km/hr (I love my logging GPS)...inattention on the part of the 18 year old driver with his 17 day old licence, was.

My 2004 BMW R1150 GS Adventure was written off and both bones in my lower leg were snapped due to the footpeg rolling over my lower leg as I was stopped and then rammed forward.

What I lost...

That sucks. Remember watching 'Long Way Round', where Ewan McGregor makes it all the way across Siberia only to get rear ended by a kid in Calgary.

I was thinking the same thing and had to laugh because they went through so much only to be rear ended by some driver in Canada. You'd think that would have happened in Asia somewhere. I have the 10 episode DVD in my collection.

Thinking back to that scene, that kid probably didn't hit Ewan all that hard. My swingarm casting was peeled open, the rear sub-frame was bent and the seat would not unlatch. Later I heard the transmission went from the person that bought the wreck. Obviously the force of the driveshaft being driven forward damaged the output shaft bearing.

Hardly the same though, you know?  I've had some wild cars, but I ALWAYS end up feeling "it" more on a bike than any car I've owned.  Much like cars, once you're infected with the bike bug, there's no curing it...
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

And in the end, its not so much about what you ride or drive, but about where you've been, what you've seen and what you've experienced.

Mind you, its better on a motorcycle. Going around the world in a car just would not be the same.

BTW, go try the new BMW S1000 the next time they have a demo day.

Certainly no worse than a Hayabusa.

When it came out I was thrilled...until I saw the Ford Tempo of motorcycles because it looks so bloated.

Except I think it looks worse than a Busa.  Something about those ridiculous asymetrical headlights makes me throw up when I see the S1000.

But you can't see them when you're riding it.

But I know, its all about image. The gobs of money these kids spend on bling. I sometimes wonder if they actually like motorcycling.

It's not all about image.  It has to be pleasing to my eye if I'm dropping $15k+ on it...

Just asymetrical headlights are....ewwww.
