Yup, my Touareg TDI was $4k more than the equivalent V6 gasoline model and consumes 11 l / 100 km average vs. 14.5 l / 100 km (premium diesel, which in turn currently costs about $0.10 / litre less than premium gas). Those figures are based on my observed fuel economy in mixed city / freeway driving, and anecdotal evidence from other Touareg drivers on the V6 gas model's economy.
I drive about 30,000 km / year, so that means in fuel alone it costs me about $1,400 less per year.
The TDI retains its value much better than the gasoline model, so I figure that by the end of year two, I'm well ahead of the game. Not to mention that the TDI has over 406 lb / ft of torque vs. 260 for the gasoline model, so in real world driving it feels much more powerful.
Consumers Report did an article in a recent magazine of theirs regarding pay-back time for hybrids and diesels. The TDI versions of VWs do a pay back in about a year. This vehicle never pays back and gas prices in the US would have to go to over $16 a gallon before the fuel-saving aspect of this makes sense.
How do you spell "jump on the so-called green wagon" - Lexus LS600h L. Strictly a "make me feel good" car for Hollywood actors and other assorted poofs.
