Sales of hybrid gas-electric cars outperformed the overall market in January—showing an 11 percent gain compared to January 2009. The overall market was essentially flat compared to one year ago. The red down arrows all over this month’s Hybrid Market Dashboard result from a 31 percent dip in sales compared to December, when dealers were clearing inventory and offering year-end incentives. Post-holiday sales in January usually show a dip.

Not surprised. The message on the benefits of these vehicles is getting out. I suspect it will continue to get better as more and better technology roles out and cost comes down.  I would love to know what the main motivator is for people buying them now, and how long they plan to keep them.

From what I understand Americans were never really keen on small cars, but they love high mileage. The Prius gives them quite a large vehicle that costs very little to run.
