Will seafoam foul spark plugs?
« on: February 11, 2010, 01:05:00 pm »
Hi Folks,

I took my 2001 Suzuki Esteem (~200k km)into the garage because I was getting poor gas mileage.  They Replaced the O2 sensor, did a wheel alignment and replaced the spark plugs.  I ran a can of seafoam through the gas tank to clean the injectors, but I was considering adding some seafoam (as directed) through the brake booster vacuum line as well, just to be sure everything is up to snuff.

I assume I won't foul the plugs doing this?  I thought I ask here just to be sure.

Thanks!
D

Is a product like that necessary or even safe to use on a modern engine, especially when added through a vacuum line?  ???

OK, got it now, Google is my friend.

I wouldn't use the stuff myself; but I know very little about it. Seems to be more useful for older technology tho.  ???

It's used to clean injectors and remove carbon deposits from the engine in various locations.  Not a lot of users here it would seem :P

Most folks here don't have a problem with their vehicles having carbon build up.  :skid:  :rofl2:

I've heard it's a good product, but have no knowledge of using it personally.  I do know that if you add it through the vacuum line, do it slowly.

You can run it through a brake booter hose but their is a real danger of hydrolocking the engine(thus ruining it). You're better off running seafoam through the tank. An alternate method would be to use it as a piston soak. Remove the plugs, add a quater bottle to each of the 4 cyls, let it soak overnight. The next day put rags over each cyl, crank engine(without the spark plugs in it) to remove the excess. Re-install the plugs and take her for a hard run down the highway to clean things out. Reality is though, if you're running fuel injector cleaner regularly, and don't baby you're vehicle, then you shouldn't have carbon build-up in the cylinders to begin with.

From what I understand Seafoam makes a product called "Deep Creep" in an aerosol can, this is the product you are supposed to spray in the intake manifold by removing a vacuum line.  It cleans out the intake manifold and intake tract where the injector cleaner can't reach.
You can also pour their  "Motor Treatment" product in the intake, but it would take more care than the spray can to avoid hydro-locking.

Carbon buildup in the intake can lead to hard starting, poor fuel mileage  and other problems.  I wonder if this would work on the Audi direct injection engines having this intake tract buildup?

Operator error, not the product.  You just can't allow the engine to suck up a whole can REALLY fast through a brake booster line.  I've never used the product myself, but have witnessed it being used (smoke show, anyone?) and others swear by it.  YOu just have to be careful how you introduce it to the engine.
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

I must have missed something because I really didn't get what that video was trying to prove or show.

I ran a can of seafoam through the gas tank to clean the injectors.

You can also use Chevron Techron additive.

No, thanks anyway.  I looked last time I was across the border at a Wal-mart, but they didn't have it, that's where I used to get it years ago in Canada.

It's snake oil. I wouldn't recommend you put that stuff anywhere near your engine.
