Cool, I'm in the process of organizing a "ice-fishing derby" on the lake our cottage is on.  We time how long it takes for people to drive to fishing holes  at various spots on the lake  ;D
Maybe this or next weekend if conditions persist.
I'll try to get pics too.

Something that looks like this much fun has got to be illegal. Fuzzy, or maybe the Charness LLB or at least a permit required?

I know that if your vehicle goes through the ice, the Ministry of Natural Resources gets on your case very quickly.  A Chevy truck went through the other end of the lake a few years ago and the ministry gives you XX days before they start fining you big time for polluting the lake.

Hmm... I wonder if it becomes Coast Guard jurisdiction?  :D

Great pics. I have taken many trucks on the ice but never any of my WRX’s.  Back in Flin Flon I would take my ’92 Dodge to the ice fishing shack most days after work. Some times we would just drill a hole on the way and attach the line to the wiper blade and set it to imtermitent for jigging  :)  then sit in the warm truck with a few cold pops.

Does the Highway Traffic Act include laws for frozen lakes?

Any public "thoroughfare" were a vehicle can access (shopping malls, underground parking in residential condos, etc.) is subject to the highway traffic act.  I once asked the Owen Sound prosecutor if I could get nailed for Impairdo on my cottage road which is a "Private Road".  I asked because I use to take my ATV down the road visiting fellow cottagers with my "mini bar" on the back since I'm very particular about ice cube quality.  :)  Now I walk.  Not nearly as much fun.  :)

Even though this cottage road is private property, it's still open to public thoroughfare.  Residents, their friends, tradesmen and the Police all use it.  Hence it is a "public thoroughfare" according to the Highway Traffic act.

If the lake is not privately owned and it is used by snowmobilers and other "motor vehicles" then it's a "public thoroughfare".

But according to insurance companies it is not as they will not cover you on a frozen lake.

Now that would be a bit of bother with a leased car and all... :P

Having had a few trucks break through the ice on the lake our cottage is on, I asked that question.
Apparently, you are covered by insurance if you are driving a "off-road" capable vehicle.  I don't know exactly what that means, but the truck that fell through was covered by insurance.
