With few exceptions I have found them completely disrespectful of other backcountry users.

And drunk since there are less police on the trails.

I remember coming across a couple of dudes on two four-wheelers. Cripes, the stench of whiskey made the hair in my nostrils curl up. It was clear why they were on four-wheelers...so they wouldn't fall over.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

The son and meself  :) went down into the Beaver Valley to Collingwood today, 260 km, and were stopped by 2 OPP driving black REV-XP 600s carbed, no studs, so it would be impossible to run an offender down in most cases.  Two young guys not much older than my son from Chatsworth Detachment.  Didn't care about speed, just papers and alcohol check.

I will add that the scenery, landscapes, are fantastic in the winter and only on a sled are you going to access them.  So some are drawn to the sheer acceleration/speed of these things and then others the landscape and of course the two pints waiting for ya at the mid way point.   :)

I've always loved sleds.  For me, it was the closest thing to getting my motorcycle fix in the winter.  My Yamaha SRX 700 (triple cylinder, triple pipe 2 stroke) was blazingly fast.  Sleds flat out hook up from a standstill and would embarrass any sportbike....and on a muscle sled like this you literally have to hang on, or you'd get thrown off.  In the spring and fall months, I used to race it on the grass.  Great fun.  I rode alot in MI.  Great groomed, marked trails and lots of them.  I live on Lake Erie, so blasting on the lake is great fun too.

I've never seen much drinking on sleds (thankfully) or much misbehaving.  Most guys just want to ride...albeit FAST.
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

That's the point I was trying to make about the bang for the buck in the speed department.  I don't think non users know what kind of sheer acceleration you can experience with these things.  Ironically, just when they have pretty much perfected these sleds the snow levels have dssipated dramatically.  I wouldn't be a user if I had to travel/trailer it.  That's a whole different ball game.

Growing up in Northern NL, to say snowmobiles were huge is a vast understatement.

However, I think the points made on this thread with regards to unsafe, disrespectful snowmobile drivers are quite valid in many cases. I also would have a tough time spending $15K on a sled unless I was living in a region where the season was longer and didn't require trailering even time I wanted to ride.

That said, I have to admit that I absolutely love snowmobiling. The performance of modern sleds is just amazing, and the combination of speed, nature and the feeling of total freedom is tough to beat.

As a teenager, my friends and I would always try to be the first out after a big snow storm. Once you've experienced being the first person to ride in 2-3ft. of virgin fresh powder on a nice sled, something changes in your perspective. Suddenly spending $10K-15K on a sled seems to make perfect sense.  ;D

Since I'm a skier, in retaliation for this event, next time I drive past a group of trucks/trailers sitting in a parking lot while the sled-heads are destroying the peace and quiet, I'll have to set all their rigs on fire...

It's a terrible generalization, but most sledders I meet are pretty obtuse.
Terrible and terribly brave, too.  I think the generalization is true.  Sledding around here seems to be mostly the beer-bellied NASCAR set.  Fat men and the equivalent of biker chicks in colour-coordinated snowmobile suits.  Heck, the last time I wore a colour-coordinated snowsuit, I was in kindergarten.

 :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

I'm just waiting for Snowy to chime in!

I have actually witnessed that. He laid a fat black patch the width of his track on the pavement. This was in the summer. Incredible. He almost didn't stop for the curb at the far end.

I once lined up against a guy on a sled that had chain drive back to a single huge slick under the rear end.  I was running low 12 second times and he whupped me.
